Karl Urban still knows nothing about Star Trek 4 as Paramount fills out summer 2019 slate.

I'm treating that as a positive.

Nothing against Urban, who is the best thing about the new movies, but.....no more please.

I don't think we'll see another one with the current crew. There will be a new one in a few years set a few years later and they may try to get a few of the actors to come back to act as a bridge but it will be new ship, (mostly) new crew, etc. or a completel different concept in the ST universe.

I think Pine and the Enterprise are done.

Yeah, this part of the franchise fizzled with Beyond. If there's no action on it right now, there probably never will be.

Let's hope Discovery can keep the ST flame burning for a while.

Disappointing but expected after the lackluster box office performance of Beyond. On the plus side this series ended with (by far) the best movie of the 'trilogy'.

I think after the J.J. trilogy ended with Beyond lesser box office, Star Trek 4 will have to be a box office winner equal to or much greater than 2009 to keep the films coming.

There will definitely be another Star Trek movie. Hell, they're doing more Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger after the last Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger flopped.

Whether this Star Trek movie has Pine, Quinto and the rest remains to be seen. I really do hope they keep making 5 year mission movies forever, but shit happens. Two movies I loved and a third I liked very much is a pretty good run.

Agree. I want more JJ. cast films, but I am extremely happy that we got the J.J. trilogy with this cast.

    More Trek on TV.

Prime Universe, Discovery continuations, post Nemesis stuff, Captain Sulu, Captain Worf, pretty much anything...

I don't see what's so odd about preferring the idea of more TV set in any time period to more Kelvinverse movies.

For the record, I don't like the designs, the plots, the scripts and some of the cast in the movies.

Yes there will. They're not making anything out of the TV show(s).

for some of us, the notion of more prime universe stories is... daunting.

discovery is clearly struggling with its place in continuity and no matter what surprises they have in store for us, it still has to slot into a very restrictive timeline without contradicting what came before (or after, however you want to look at it).

the kelvin timeline is rife for new stories. it's sad to see CBS arbitrarily leave it behind. it would be like the franchise turning around after the shaky first couple of seasons of TNG and just sticking with the TOS era and characters because that was what worked and what fans wanted at the time. the kelvin timeline films are obviously not for everyone, but there's promise in the kelvin timeline and freedom for the filmmakers. discovery could do everything it's doing now in the kelvin timeline -- including superficially pulling from abrams' established look and filming style -- and no one would be tripped up by its apparent deviations from canon.

we may love the prime universe, but the franchise needs the kelvin timeline.

Oh, I get the lack of story restrictions thing.

I don't have a big issue with a reboot or a recast - just with the way it's been done.

I'm not super optimistic at this point but why should he know? He doesn't play the protagonist and he doesn't produce them either. Not even Pine and Quinto knew about the previous movies up until everyone got the news basically, and they play the main guys! If there is a fourth movie planned, Urban wouldn't know now, so this is no news. It changes nothing compared to yesterday.

As for him being happy about beyond, of course he is since he got what he demanded, and I guess he isn't supposed to be objective and recognize that what he likes maybe wasn't and isn't the best for this trek, but I can't help but feel bitterness over his "favorite movie" possibly being the end of the franchise. And I don't feel the ending of beyond is satisfying and so positive, they had done too little with these characters for me. There is so much they could've done with them and the potential of a new reality still, and we will never see it now. I just wish this reboot got a chance, a real one, to be its own thing.

The obliviousness around beyond's failure is a problem. If they aren't even honest enough to take the responsibility of their failure instead of pretending they don't get what went wrong , or can't find reasons, they already start bad and are hopeless regardless.

i think if paramount wasn't oblivious to the issues with its releases, it wouldn't still be struggling the way it is.

there's a ton of "future of the kelvin timeline" threads here now, but i was just thinking (and it's sad) that i'd gladly trade a 15 episode season in the grim new prime universe for another 2 hours in the kelvin timeline.

I don't think preferring the idea of more TV in prime is odd. It's just that, firstly, the whining of wanting a post Nemesis show is getting REALLY old in Discovery threads. Secondly, the thought that a Captain Sulu or ESPECIALLY Captain Worf show could in any way be a viable product for CBS All Access is laughable. There are indeed whispers that I've heard about a second show that is possible but contingent on how well Discovery does that is set in the same time period as DSC and in prime.

    I agree.

I'm perfectly happy with Discovery, and through it's success we'll get other shows. Probably set in other time periods.

Yes, but Sulu / Worf is useful shorthand. I kind of just chucked them out for effect.

I'm glad you are enjoying Discovery. In case you missed it, a second show is being considered but not in a different time period. The story of the two shows would take place at the same time like DS9 and Voyager. Now, this part is my own speculation, but I suspect they want the shows running concurrently so that when one show is on break or between seasons, the other show will be running. That way you always have at least one Trek show going. It will also prevent people cancelling CBSAA in the months when Trek isn't running.

The show illustrated to CBS people were willing to buy their stupid service for Star Trek and Star Trek alone so of course they want another show.
