TOS characters in Discovery

I'd like to see Karl Urban as Bones, but I doubt we're going to see any of those actors because it would just confuse people.

I agree. The best thing to do with any TOS characters (even the main ones) is to just completely recast them. No Quinto, no Urban, no Pegg (at least not as their movie characters).

In my dream of dreams, DIS Season 2 would open up on the bridge of the Enterprise, all decked out ("refit") Discovery-style, with Pike and crew in new uniforms, being rescued by the Discovery, Europa-style. And then we keep following the Discovery, and save refit Enterprise for the tie-ins.

I really see no reason to re-do the old characters. Some small cameo might be fun, but this show needs to stand on its own.

There's actually basically nothing canonical which happened in the Trekverse in 2256, other than Leonard McCoy breaking up with Nancy Crater.

Which means they can do new stories.

According to Producer Akiva Goldsman there won't be any other TOS characters in Discovery (at least in Season 1)

I actually agree with this. There's absolutely no "guest stars" worth mentioning from the TOS era who could plausibly appear here other than Mudd (who is already being used).

I meant they could make new stories for the TOS characters.

Well we have already had Sarek and Harry Mudd so that may be it for a while at least.

Doubt they will use up all the cameo options in the first season.

We could see Pike at some point but that really depends on just how secret the Discovery's mission is, they may have strict orders not to go near any other Starfleet vessels as the unusual design of the Discovery is bound to cause questions to be asked.

The fewer people that see the Discovery the better, that goes double for any of the other empires out there like the Romulans, Cardassians or Klingons.

Just no. I didn't like JJ redoing TOS characters and I don't want anyone else to do that either. Just leave them be, make new characters. (And fortunately Discovery is mostly doing just that. Sarek was unneeded.)

The series needs a multi-arc exploration on the origins of Doctor Sevrin and his followers.
Do you mean this guy, and his followers (sitting behind him)?

Seriously though, maybe we could see Commodore Mendez, but as Captain Mendez.

I didn't say redo them.

They should get Seth MacFarlane to play a Starship Captain everyone likes more than Lorca, only for him to get blown up.

I don't know about MacFarlane (I get the Orville reference), but they can do a scene like in Reno 911: Miami (with Dwayne Johnson) or that TBS show Wrecked (with the Special Ops guy), with a stereotypical amazing character is introduced, and the narrative leads us to assume that this is going to be the greatest character ever, but then he is killed (or in the case of a TOS character, put out of commission somehow) immediately and we're stuck with our main crew.

That kind of scene might be better for The Orville.

I always liked Kang (from the TOS episode Day Of The Dove) among the klingons. I'd like to see him appear at some point in Discovery.

Kang also knew Curzon Dax in the TOS era if I'm not mistaken, which could open up for a trill guest play.

Perhaps the Kor we know is also a member of the House of Kor, but he isn't the original Kor who started the house in the first place.

IIRC, the house was named after his grandfather (who was also named Kor).

As for TOS characters who could appear in DSC: What about all those Commodore characters we saw? We could see them in DSC as Captains. Decker, Stone, Robert Wesley, etc.

And of course Robert April. Probably an Admiral by now. In my headcanon, played by Michael Palin.
