TWOK Khan is the only compelling villain in any of the movies, which isn't surprising that they always try to recapture his shtick over and over. I always thought it was odd that the filmmakers resisted the temptation to hype up the film with the return of Khan. The whole John Harrison mystery box reveal served very little purpose beyond an attempt to surprise audiences (which it hardly did, let's be honest). The James Bond series made that silly mistake too trying to be coy about Christoph Waltz not being Blofeld, when everyone could see it a mile away. THE DARK KNIGHT and IRON MAN 3 did a much more effective job of hiding the revelation of their villains.

Though Bad Robot did drop the ball in not even bothering to claim Cumberbatch was Harrison the moment he was cast, which raised more eyebrows.

Everything surrounding ST:ID was an unholy mess.

But I still enjoy Cumberbatch's performance.

Sorry, that makes me feel physically ill. He isn't compelling to me. He's angry, wants revenge, and is in to torture porn. No, thank you.

Give me Nero or Cartwright or Chang any day, please.

So... like Nero, only without the charisma and more the thought out backstory (albeit, Nero doesn't have his "Space Seed").

This is the first time I've ever read anyone suggesting that Cartwright and Chang were compelling.

Chang is charismatic, for sure. You can't help but like the guy, and take delight in his sheer glee during the battle scenes.

I at least by in to Nero's backstory and feel sympathy for him. Nero was driven insane, and I feel no malice towards him-only pity.

Chang has been my number 1 most compelling villain for a long time. Cartwright is interesting because it reflects in his change even from TVH to TUC. He is kind of dynamic in a way, without any pretentiousness.

Chang reflects a more pure, almost black and white, type of thinking regarding the Federation, that of the way things have always been is the way they should always be.

Charismatic? Absolutely. Compelling? No, though I don't think the movie had any intentions to make him as such

BC eats every scene he's in with his screen presence. That said, I wish they'd cast an Indian actor as Khan.

I think he's a big part of why STID did well at the worldwide box office, despite the casting issues. Cumberbatch has a large fanbase, a barely recognisable til the last 5 minutes Idris Elba, not so much.
