I have watched the first three episodes as they aired and was watching this one up until the point where we have a Starfleet captain warmongering and "Klingons" that now apparently eat human flesh, and I have turned it off. I am so sick of this garbage. I'm sorry, this is not Star Trek. Not MY Star Trek anyway. I don't like a single thing they have done to this franchise. Star Trek is dead, and it died with Enterprise. To those that are liking this, I'm happy for you. But I've been watching TNG a lot the last week, just watched "Darmok" today. And to follow up something that masterful with the wreck that is Discovery just makes Discovery an even more bitter pill to swallow. I'm not trying to troll, or bait anyone. I am just simply heartbroken that something that has been so dear to me for my entire 34 years of life is being handled this way, first with the Kelvin movies and now this new "Prime" universe show. I'm sorry, this is not my Trek universe.

I'd give this a solid 8/10.

We're getting to know the characters better. I liked Michael's attitude towards the creature. It was sad to see it used that way, especially because my cat was sitting on me during the episode, and I imagined her in a similar situation. The intrigue with the Klingons was interesting, I am curious to see where it all goes. The whole spore drive thing is still pretty weird, but I'm glad we got to see what a game changer it could be.

I liked Stamet's line "I always wanted to converse with my mushrooms!" Almost seemed like banter between people who weren't just trying to be assholes to each other. And Tory, I mean Landry, died! I'm ok with this. Felt really sorry for the beastie, and I hope Burnham grows a conscience about what they are doing. That said I still think the mushroom thing is silly, but I've accepted the "magical crystals allow for FTL," so it's not much sillier than that.

Klingon parts were not nearly as tedious as before, but I'm still not all that interested in them or watching them make googly eyes at each other.

The Klingons are becoming more interesting characters. Once they move past the rhetoric, and the audience starts to recognize the people behind the armor, and the desperation of their own situation, they're becoming compelling characters on their own.

Well, it does make the Klingons something to be feared. During TNG and DS9, they sort of became buffoons if you ask me. All that "It shall be glorious to die in Battle!" got old really quickly, it was hard to take them seriously.

I think I'm finally starting to get an inkling that this is a Trek show and not another generic Sci Fi series. Some quick thoughts.

  • The plotline with "Ripper" is gonna be very interesting and I'm excited to see how it turns out for Burnham.
  • Good riddance Landry.
  • I still love Tilly
  • The Klingons are starting to interest me. The words "palace intrigue on the Klingon homeworld" come to mind

I respect your observations, but I want to see where this is going. I remain optimistic that this ends up tying in to the following series in a way that is meaningful.

I love Lorca and his "win at all costs" attitude. I have a feeling that will bit him before the end of the season but an interesting stance for a captain.
I get the feeling he's the dude who is to make Michael look good, but I actually LIKE Lorca's unfettered greed...it's really quite likeable in a two dim way...

This episode, at least for me, also felt like an action movie. Next week looks the same way. I like the cerebral & action mix.

So...a lot of flashy and unlikely CG ecpended on getting Burnham into a uniform.

She's still an utter dick to her roommate, for no excusable reason.
Agreed...I know so many capable women like her roommate and they are treated just as shabbily by their prettier and more socially egotistical co workers....yet another reason why I really dislike her.

Yeah, this is the first episode I can actually say that I genuinely liked. I appreciated the plot twist involving the tartigrade (and Landry getting killed) as it signaled this isn't just grimdark "war Trek." The bridge scenes were also appreciated. On the whole the episode had a bit more of a classic Trek vibe to it.

The Klingons still aren't quite doing it for me. I think a big issue is the subtitling, as the font is hard to read. And since I'm focused on reading the text, I miss a lot of subtleties in the physical performance (since the makeup stops the actors from being super expressive.

This was goofy in places, but that struck me as less of a sin than it being kinda dull. It's like they stretched Devil in the Dark way, way out and added a bunch of angst and cannibal Klingons. I continue to think the decompressed nature of the show isn't doing it any favors.

Everything that happened in this episode, at least on the Starfleet side, was pretty predictable. Surprise, surprise -- the monster isn't a monster. Convenient, though, that it's a navigational computer. I'm guessing this explains why the spore drive disappears -- they're enslaving (and torturing?) an alien creature that will either be the last of its kind or that Burnham will return to its people.

That said, I find Lorca compelling. He's by far the best character. And I hated to see the security chief meet her fate. She had potential.

Glad Harry Mudd is showing up next week. Maybe he can inject some life into the proceedings.

Because TNG didn’t feature war mongering starfleet captains? They did. And why is it so hard to fathom some Klingons practice some form of cannibalism? We have cultures on earth to this day that do. Trek has been dark and gory, I mean serious 30 years ago we had TNG Conspiracy, a very graphic episode.

And also comparing Darmok a great 5th season episode to a show’s first few isn’t really fair. You do realize the fourth episode of TNG was the almost universally hated Code of Honor. Imagine the outcry that would get if that was the new episode in 2017.

You are absolutely entitled to feel however you wish. There is no wrong answer.
