Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

The acting on Discovery is first rate, IMO, and not one of the things wrong with it.

 

Orville displays the episode title on screen, which I think most (if not all) the previous Trek series did too, but haven't seen that so far from Discovery. No big deal really, but it is kind of a minor tradition that I liked.

 

Not many shows do that anymore!

 

I've been very Impressed with the acting, Maybe aside from Martin-Green's, the characters are yet a bit "stiff" but that usually takes a little time to settle in. Writers need to grow into the character a little as the actors do.

We also haven't gotten to know too many characters well enough yet, which once we do, I think will help with perception about the acting.

 

The Orville has a layer of knowing cheesiness along with the humour. It was interesting to see that in the first episode, they had a landing party consisting of one man and three women and an entirely gay species. What a fun dig to take at Star Trek's lamentable record in both regards in the opening scenes no less.

There is an air of seventies camp about the Orville that is delightful but Discovery seems to be navigating territory that Enterprise should have trodden. The prequel should have been raw and exciting but it just felt too TNG in tone.

Discovery had its own little dig at Trek tropes in episodes 1 and 2 about sending the captain and first officer on dangerous missions with no back up. I'm interested to see what other risks they'll take.

You don't feel that the characters in Discovery are entitled to be right. They're just people fumbling in the dark and they may not be entitled to your sympathy. That's very refreshing.

Both are proving that rumours of the demise of Star Trek as an ongoing concept were greatly exaggerated.

I just started watching The Orville. It's fun and nostalgic and has a brooklyn nine nine in space vibe to it which i like. It's dessert to Discovery's main meal, which is not a bad thing as dessert is awesome. I think they compliment each other in that they offer two different perspectives on science fiction both of which are equally valid. I don't see the need to choose one over the other.

 

I can't really compare them. I haven't seen enough Discovery to really judge it. Frankly, the way they've altered Klingons, one of my favorite aspects of Trek, is a deal breaker. The liberties they have taken with all manner of canonical matters irritates me, but perhaps not enough to keep me from watching the show--if I already had All Access. I'm not going to pay for it though. The paywall is another deal breaker.
What I can say, without hesitation, is that The Orville entertains me and makes me happy. It's not "Trek" Trek, but it is Trek-like enough to function as SF methadone for my Trek craving. Not as much of a rush as The Good Stuff, but enough to dull the pain of withdrawal. Since 2009 Trek has been a source of constant irritation and significant personal pain for me. If your mileage has varied, I'm happy for you, you have something to enjoy that no longer works for me. To translate to troll-talk: The Orville is like a soothing cream for my Trek butt-hurt!

I watched about 20 minute of Orville with my wife, turned it off. I enjoy the look, the sets, and some of the hopefullness that so many Star Trek fans want...but the humor is awful. I'm sorry, don't find much humor in a dog licking itself and then peopl commenting on it.

 

It would appear you went into the beginners trap.
The emerging consensus seems to be that the Orville sucks in its pilot episode, which is filled with one liners that falls flat.
But then, it suddenly kind of finds its stride in episode two.
And people fall in love with it with episode 3, and that sentiment is only strengthened by episode four.

Finish the last ten minutes of the pilot, and then give episodes two and three a go. Chances are good that like so many other who were ready to write it off after the first episode, you will change your mind.

 

Orville really suffers from abruptly shifting tone, grasping for cheap jokes and having characters behave unnbelievably because the story (or punchline) needs them to. The ship sets manage to look both expensive and very cheap, and the way they're stealing so blatantly from the source material is distracting. And yet I'm probably enjoying it as much as I am Discovery.

Both so far seem hugely derivative -- Discovery from TNG and Discovery from the more recent trends in genre programming. Let's hope they find their feet.

 

And, some of us just loved it immediately because it's good.

Not Discovery, I mean the other show.

 

The Orville is scratching an itch I have for classic sci-fi, Discovery just seems to be following the trend of making everything dark and gritty.

 

Orville suffers from the fact it isn't actually broadcast anywhere, where discovery is available worldwide.

 

It is broadcast all over the US, and is also available streaming on Hulu. Can't speak for the rest of the world.
