It’s back. It’s not a 2 hour movie. I don’t know what’s next. It’s not “planet of the week” or “anomaly of the week”. They’re throwing money at the screen. It’s interesting and hopefully fun. Our hero is disgraced and has to redeem herself. Very DS9. Love it - very happy - would be ok if the Klingons started texting each other though.
I'm very happy we have Trek back on TV as well, and also happy to be back on a message board while Trek is on each week. I have the same sort of feeling I did when Enterprise started, being excited but ultimately not knowing what's in store for me, not knowing what the show is even. I am very optimistic though. And I seriously hope this leads to mini-series and 2 hour movies and one-shot stories too. Like the possible Khan one-off story they might be doing. And maybe even other series that run during Discovery. Universe of possibilities available I feel, but overall I could not be happier than right now. Star Trek is back on TV, something I thought would never happen again after Enterprise ended. As a side note I'm also re-watching ALL the series concurrently while watching Discovery. Feel like my viewing of Discovery will be improved by an overall Trek episode refresher.
It feels very little like the Trek we're used to. So I can certainly understand the trepidation people have, and some of the dislike. But viewed in a vacuum, on its own merits, and I'd like to think more people would appreciate it. But certainly the style and format are not everyone's cup of tea, particularly as it's not like the past 50 years of TV trek in many respects. But even as someone who grew up on TNG, and who considers Voyager under-rated, I think it's fantastic, and eagerly await the next episode.
Good. Because "the Trek we're used to" ended up a bloated mess of mediocrity that needed to be taken out behind the barn and put down with extreme prejudice. And it was, thank god.
And that I'll disagree with, while still expressing my utter delight at what I've witness thus far in the new series...
It's the first time I've really enjoyed Trek since DS9. Voyager and Enterprise just felt like the series on bland medicore autopilot (even when Enterprise improved immensely, it still felt like the franchise was in poor health). The scene on Discovery's sister ship actually got my heart beating faster.
Besides seeing Discovery, Trek's return to TV also gave me reason to revisit Enterprise. I'm really grateful I did, because it was better than I was willing to accept back then. The biggest joy I've had since Discovery started, my friends are willing to give it a shot. I've had very successful viewing parties, and so far, the non-fans are just as happy as I am.
I'm honestly glad it's a weekly series. Gives each chapter plenty of coverage and keeps us guessing as to the next one. I know it's just a corporate retainment tactic, and I'm not excusing it per se, but I prefer it!
I'm not ultra excited for Discovery, but I do like it and like that we can talk about new Trek on a weekly basis again.
Since I started watching Star Trek in 1992, I've always been excited for the next new episode. I was spoiled the first 13 years as a Trek fan with non-stop Trek. It's really nice to have new stories unfold weekly again. The movies were fine, but I don't rewatch them very much.
It needed to be said. Voyager was shit, Enterprise was slightly less shit, both were mediocre and predictable and frankly, neither brought anything of value to the table. Mainly because Trek was at a point where it needed new blood at multiple levels to keep it fresh, exciting and relevant. It also needed higher ups who were willing to let the creatives be bolder with the concept. None of that happened and the whole bloated mess just imploded on itself.
Gotta say it again. Waking up every day knowing there's a fresh, new, unseen Star Trek episode each Sunday is absolutely freaking amazing. Our world is a difficult place to be right now, and the hope of Trek is needed, and very welcome on TV in my life.
This. I haven't been excited for new TV Trek since DS9 ended. The later series were just... there. The JJTrek movies got me interested in Trek movies again, and Discovery is reinvigorating my interest in Trek on TV. It's not perfect, plenty left to criticise, but I'm very much interested and engaged. That's a good start!
