Spoilers STD 1x03 Preview [and for the rest of the season]

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

For fans curious about where Star Trek: Discovery will go next with Michael Burnham, an interview by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts...

What is startling to me, is the more of these "previews" I see, about the only character I like in any of them is Harry Mudd. I just can't seem to like Burnham. Hopefully I like Lorca, I think he looks like a Star Trek captain. But not liking the main character does not bode well.

Very cool preview! Like the direction this is going. Seems like they won't brush away what happened in the premiere in the span of one episode, it has lasting ramifications. It has the effect of making the first two episodes look like a mere prologue to the actual story the show wants to tell.

It looks like Lorca will be less of the rogue Starfleet captain I thought he would be and more of a man who just does things differently and is willing to give Burnham a second chance. Also, does it look like Lorca will end up being a prisoner of the Klingons, all Archer-style?

Did anyone else notice that Michael wears the black Starfleet insignia on her mustard suit. Like the ones we were seeing in the costumes featurette. Interesting.

Oh, and: They are hiding the ship! :shifty:

Yeah, my wife just tweeted me exactly the same thing.
There is so much space in that docking bay, how big is the Discovery again.:devil:

Well, your argument was that they are hiding it because they don't believe in the design. I don't see how anything confirms that.
Ship looks great to me, doesn't look too far away from the TOS Enterprise either, clean lines, minimum outer detail and no window overload except on the saucer where they should be for this era.

Compare that to the Shenzou that had so much going on around the outer hull which fit in well with it being one of the last of the NX styled ships, if you know what I mean.

This looks really good, cannot wait!
Yeah it does, hopefully those who were switched off by the pilot will appreciate the soft reset of a new Ship and Captain.

I do feel they could have just started with the 3rd episode and slowly revealed what happened on the Shenzou via flashback.

Still its done now. :techman:

I have to say, it's awesome to hear Klingons speaking English with a Klingon accent. "You sheek to deshtrroy de tlhingan empire." More of that please.

It looks better than what we got in the first two episodes.
I agree. I am cautiously optimistic that things will get better going forward. IMO, they should have jettisoned this whole "first two episodes are the prologue, then we have a second pilot" concept and just started the series from what the third episode looks to be. Cut the scenes from the first two episodes and make them flashbacks to explore over the arc so we know about Burnham and go from there.

Indeed, I had a similar thought when I saw the trailer for episode 3. It seems like a lot of the stuff that happens in ep1 and 2, while it'll inform events, is mostly just padding. Nothing on the Shenzou needed to be seen for what happens after to make sense.

It could be that the first two episodes were just to solve a, "this is how we got here", issue. The writers I believe, said that they didn't want the war to go beyond one season. If this is the case, then I would assume that Burnham is arriving on the Discovery quite a while past the second episode. Again, if this is the case, then it would not work to start the series right in the middle of the war. But, I guess they could have used some flashbacks as a history, however, I already feel that the writers have already lost any "new trek" people especially with the first episode.

Looks like Battlestar Galactica. :/ Cast wasn't lying about the 'gritty' direction.
That trailer actually looks pretty damn good and has me a lot more excited for the rest of the season than the first two mediocre episodes did. I'm hoping that this third episode really does play out like a second pilot and washes away the bad taste left by the first two episodes. If it really is a significant improvement, then I don't know what they were thinking trying to promote CBS All Access with such a disappointing opener that doesn't even feature the name ship and crew, especially when they could have established a lot of this background info from the pilot through flashbacks and expository dialogue, which they clearly aren't afraid of using. Hopefully it's not just a very well made trailer and is actually indicative of how good the rest of the season will be.

I heard the new Star Fleet uniforms are made of mushroom leather so no cows were harmed. Also Burnham is vegan and later on in the series becomes gluten-intolerant. (Just trying to lighten the thread guys.)

Here's a random trivia fact. The Netflix episodes come with Klingon subtitles.

Just a question from someone (American) who doesn't have the Netflix version. Are the Klingon subtitles in the Latin alphabet? Or in the Klingon script (piQad)? Or both? I'm guessing the former.

Maybe her resultant irritable bowel syndrome is part of that "new way to fly" Lorca talks about.
