Ok I'll say it- I like the DSC Klingons

I'm really into the new klingons nd have been since i saw the first photos. They actually feel alien as opposed to a metalpocalypse motorcycle gang in outer space or mongol caricatures like they did in TNG and TOS respectively. The way they spoke didn't really bother me and was it just me or was the klingon spoken quicker and feel more fluid during the flashbacks to T'Kuvma's childhood? It got me thinking that the slow, deliberate way the klingons were speaking might be some type of formal or 'high' speech used by nobles.

They certainly look a lot better in motion than they did in photos. I'm hoping that we get a look at different species of Klingons as the series goes on.

As noted above, some of the look could be rooted in fundamentalism.

I don't mind the look of them per say, but I am pretty tired of them getting a makeover so damn much. It's like any time someone tries to reboot anything Star Trek, it's time to remodel Klingons. It's been going on my whole life, & I'm old, & kind of done with it. Just move on to another alien imho. We actually have TWO different remodels of Klingons currently going on in Star Trek at the same time now. It's pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.

If Wookies looked one way in 4-6, then years later they looked another way in 1-3 & then another way in 8-10, & there'd been two different tv shows over that time, where they looked entirely different there too, people would think it was pretty stupid. It's not a costume redesign like uniforms

Indeed! I was so tired of the leather, long hair and aladdin shaped metal boots. But we may eventually see the motorcycle-gang type Klingon later in the series as there could be distinct Klingon races. Take for example Captain Sisko looked nothing like Chief O'Brian aside from both of the being human. As there may be many races of different looking Klingons and we may be just seeing the first race they introduced in the pilots.

Indeed. I was hoping to see both TOS-era and TNG-era Klingons in the holocommunications.

You're right. All of the other house leaders in the holocommunications did all look the same. But the writers may be exploring a Klingon period where this race of Klingon hold the most powerful houses. Time will tell but I hope they tie it all in well.

Maybe this war will cost the Klingon houses that participate so dearly that other, unseen houses in the Empire rise to prominence.

I felt there was quite a bit of variation in terms of the make up and the executive producer mentioned in after trek that there were efforts made to give each klingons different facial features. I'd been keen to see more racial and cultural variation. I'll be a bit disappointed if they go down the homogenous route of previous series.

I'd give the prosthetics more flexibility. That's a fair point. I'd give them hair. But I like them overall.
Makeup effects generally evolve as a show goes on, usually making it easier to apply or to allow the actor greater freedom in the performance. They'll get better.

As for me, I'm liking the design and their storyline. It was great to see them actually unload on the Federation.

Some of them looked pretty different. One seemed to have way more pronounced folds on their forehead. Another looked like it had a very large ridge, sort of like the one from TMP. I could easily see the Klingons we've seen before fit in, implying the Klingons have several different races with diverse appearances. This is just one of them.

I really liked the diversity of their ships.
There was no two ships alike in the battle sequence of the second episode. As nice as I might be to see a D7 or a bird of prey - I really prefer the variety we saw.

The oddness of the Klingon ships was one of the things that took me out of it completely, to be honest....

Why didn't Kirk ever have a ready room? ;)

I will say, I am liking them a rather lot. As much as I am a fan of the old (TNG) style, I like them being alien, not just dark humans with funny forheads.

If the Klingons don't start speaking English soon, I am going to drop this show. The Klingon scenes kill the very little momentum the show has.

My feeling is that the Klingons are probably only going to speak english when talking to the federation. With their notions of cultural and racial purity, the Klingons probably feel that english is beneath them, they have only learned it to understand their enemy. When they are solely amongst klingons it makes no sense for Klingon characters to be speaking english with each other. Personally, I found the klingon dialogue immersed me into the klingon scenes more and made them feel like aliens.

I'm currently watching the DS9 episode 'Soldiers of the empire', an entire episode about klingons set on a klingon ship where they only speak english. There is no logical in universe explanation for it and it just comes off as lame and lazy writing.

Quite honestly, I don't get the reason why the Klingons had to change appearance. Of course, they already had in ID, but the Klingons in "our" reality have been established in 5 series. It's a bit ludicrous to change the appearance of the most often used alien race, especially in a prequel (10 years before the were shown as humans basically with a moustache). Either go with subtle changes if you have to use a known species as enemy, or go with another unknown species.

And yes, they should start talking in English - I agree their discussions do take a bit away from the momentum.

Actually Kor is son of Rynar (whoever that is).

Kor
Indeed. I noticed a slightly different use of 'House' in Discovery - in TNG every family seemed to be a House, whereas here it was more like a kingdom or group of families.

Kol can be part of the House of Kor without being Dahar Master Joe's father.

They've been established to look different depending on who the makeup supervisor happens to be. ;)

They did all look too alike. They dressed differently, but some didn't have hair, others look like TOS, others like TMP ones, etc. We'll see how far they take it, but the makeup looked too mask-y and plasticky to me, and the teeth made them sound...uncomfortable. I like how far they tried to take it, but they need to do better. I wonder if they'll Game of Thrones the different Houses though. Give each their own identity and loyalties. That would be cool. Honestly though, IDGAF about Klingon douchery. They're roid-heads, and I don't find them interesting.
