Chekov Replacement?

Always loved Chekov the character and Koenig the actor. He's my favorite of the secondary characters on The Original Series. I like his greenness and his youthful, jovial attitude towards service. He and McCoy are the characters I could most imagine hanging out with were I to live on the Enterprise. I'm glad they went with Walter Koenig.

At the time, wasn't there a memo from Roddenberry that referred to "that smallish fellow from The Monkees," or something like that?

TOS director Joe Pevney recommended Walter Koenig for the role of Chekov, even though Pevney said Koenig had the worst Russian accent he ever heard. I am not a huge fan of Koenig's portrayal of Chekov. So, are there any other actors from the 1960's who you think could have filled the part better?
Davey Jones? ;)

The only thing I hated about Chekov were those awful gigantic wigs they put on his head early on. Ugh.

I can't decide if his wig was worse than his comb over. Koenig must have been prematurely bald because if you look at a recent photo of him, he either has a cheap toupee on or he is hairless as a baby's bottom.

I've seen the photo, but can't locate it on the internet. He is wearing a light colored, button tunic similar to what the Monkees wore. Here is another photo of Koenig....

"Arrrrrreeee you lookeeng at me?"

That photo of Walter Koenig in that strange uniform. Were there any plans for him to actually wear that thing on the show?

Maybe that was pre-Star Trek, and Koenig was just dressed up for a head shot in the coolest, most mod shirt he could lay hands on.

If someone can find it online or post a scan, that would be great!

Found it. Page 345 of Inside Star Trek by Solow and Justman. It looks like sone type of publicity shot of Koenig.

That's exactly where I've seen the photo my Lord! Hair combed in such a way to hide those thinning areas and a wraparound tunic that looks like it came from the 23rd century!
