No. Even The Handmaid's Tale, which I loved, meandered quite a bit.

Even the people who say they are excited for Discovery don't seem happy.

Haven't watched it, can't really say. But that's one example out of hundreds.

I'm very happy about DSC. Not so happy to get together with other fans only to see that a very vocal contingent is slamming DSC without giving it a chance.

Not a lot of slamming going on here.

The word you want is "skepticism."

Like I said before, this is a message board not a pep rally.

Some are skeptical. Some are already writing it off.

No one much has said they're not watching the pilot now, have they?

I've already written it off so much I have had CBS All-Access for the last three weeks in anticipation and own two of the Discovery arrowhead badges.

You, on the other hand, are so anxious to win the argument before the series even premieres that you started a topic titled, in part, "This should settle it" last week.

    That's what's being called "boosterism."

Do you believe it's impossible for people to go into this willingly, but are so convinced they won't like it that all they'll do is look for flaws so they can claim they were right? It happened in 2001 and it's happening now.

Mainly what I felt it settled was whether or not DSC was a secret reboot or would ignore canon. I said in the thread I could have been more clear about it.

I just feel like optimism better serves us than pessimism. I don't understand why that's become so wrong.

I don't understand why not jumping on a bandwagon has become so wrong.

There are several bandwagons one can jump on. One such bandwagon is the "I'm skeptical so I refuse to say even one positive thing about it."

    You're on a bandwagon, too.

It's really tough to get away with the "you're another" dodge when called out. Try something different, please.

I have an opinion of what I see. I have no ax to grind here.

I'm generally, from TNG forward, pretty excited about any new Trek - I've been called a booster from time to time myself, especially as regarded Enterprise.

I don't care if a new production changes everything. In fact, I rather prefer it.

I don't give a fuck about canon. I consider it trivial. If they recast Spock or Kirk as a woman, I'd be interested.

I'm not protective of older productions and shows, although I have strong preferences among them (TOS first and always).

You can reboot the hell out of Trek and I'll look forward to it. If you did a gussied-up version of TOS with the same sets and costumes - I'd be real skeptical of the success of that, but I'd love it (I've worked on a fan film or two).

I flat-out love the Abrams movies, all three of them. I'll fight it out with all comers on that one. :D

I like all the Discovery cast I've seen. I like the look of the Klingons. I like the spaceship models. I'm not in love with the sets and costumes.

I was extremely positive about this series until we started seeing, you know, content - people talking, moving images, music, etc.

Now I'm more skeptical. Because I respond to what they show me.

Oh, don't worry - this series will be a huge success for CBS. I can almost guarantee that. Most Trek fans will come around.

So what the fuck are you so defensive about?

But here's the thing about that - EACH person will watch and make a final judgement about that for themselves. The production team behind the series can state their intentions and how they themselves perceive the final result from working on it and viewing the edited episodes (which they of course have to do before the public does - but it's up to tjhe viewer to decide whether or not he feels it's a major retcon/reboot or 'follows canon'.

In 1987 when I first saw TNNG on the small screen, GR could scream at te top of his lungs "This doesn't change what happened in TOS at all and it's 100% a continuatioon in the same fictional universe 100 or so years later..."
    ^^^
But yeah, it never came across taht way to me as so much of what was part of the TOS/Star Trek Universe previously was suddenly retconned (like saying "The Federation never used 'money' because by that time man had socially evolved beyond it" -- except for the fact that money (aka Federation 'credits') was often mentioned/referred to and in a couple of episodes openly shown being used.

So yeah, for some people the debate won't be 'settled' until they ACTUALLY WATCH the episodes for themselves, no matter what members of the Production team say about it or what they intended. And further there probably are and will be fans - who based on the marketing and promotional material released will decide - "No, I'm not interested in this." <--- (I'm NOT one of these but there will be some.)
    ^^^
And taht doesn't make them any less of a Star Trek fan, because they aren't interested in this latest incarnation, but still like one or more of the previous incarnations of Star trek that came before.)

As I said, I'm primarily a TOS fan. I like some of TNG, more of DS9, and ENT - BUT, I myself have zero interest in viewing Star Trek:Voyager beyond what I watched of it before I decided I was no longer interested in watching it further.
    ^^^
That does't make me any less of a 'Star Trek fan' of the other incarnations I DO like - and overall I'd still call myself a 'Star Trek fan'.

I guess I'm "positive enough" for CBS. I just pre-ordered Desperate Hours from Amazon.
