Deep Space Nine reference

Please, God, NO Section 31 references in DSC.

But we know they were around since the founding of the Federation. Granted I don't know if I would want any Section 31 based episodes because they are not suspose to be known until DS9 but a reference might be nice. Maybe Mudd could imply that he has worked for a "special section" of the Federation once before and doesn't say anymore about it.

Harry Mudd wouldn't last ten seconds with Section 31.

This new version might. I wasn't thinking of him as a agent but more like some criminal guy they used to help carryout a mission or 2. Like smuggling some drugs somewhere or stealing a ship for them. Stuff like that.

The Discovery is painted black, has gaps in the saucer, has a cool black bridge set and purple highlights on the outside. I'm pretty sure it's a Section 31 ship, a la the USS Vengeance.

I'm sure I already said that elsewhere in the past, but I doubt – and hope, really – that they will do nothing with Section 31. I liked that storyline on Deep Space Nine, but come on, I would prefer they come up with new stuff.

Section 32?

A reference doesn't really impact a story. It's just a nice callback or adds a little extra flair or depth to what the real story happens to be about. I also don't want any Section 31 stories, at least not right now. Who knows what we might think in a few years. At the very least, if you establish that it is exist and is still part of canon then it helps sell the idea that the Federation isn't the perfect paradise that it sometimes is presented as, even if you don't ever actually use them in a story.

It's fanwank, and adds nothing. The whole point of Inquisition was that this super secret arm of Starfleet can't even be confirmed to exist, let alone have their own eeeeeevil black ships which run around as part of the mainstream fleet. I can buy a handful of guys in a room somewhere who have some naked pictures of the president and use leverage to manipulate what they see as important, but we've got to seriously consider whether the Federation is what we say it is of there's an overt Gestapo like secret police running around.

While it worked as a one off thing, and kind of worked again in Inter Arma, it then became a way of having an edgy thing to name drop and it got silly. Not everyone in Starfleet who isn't perfect has to be 'section 31'.

I agree that every bad person in Starfleet shouldn't be seen as Section 31. For starters I don't think they could be even bigger than some official undercover department like, starfleet intelligence. I think they might have started off like that in the early days, even during the "Enterprise" time but I think they are more likely a kind of terrorist group that sometimes does business with the Federation.

As for something that is a fanwank I guess it could be called that or a name drop. I don't see how it hurts anything and it's just some fun extra detail to talk about on message boards. I think it's this extra stuff that actually helps keep Trek from being just a random sci-fi show set in the future on spaceships. It's way better than what you would see in old 50's sci-fi movies were you can tell that the people didn't put any thought into the universe those movies were set in. I think it can also maybe even spark future story idea's if you get real lucky. The episode were O'Brien got abducted by Carddisaians and put on trial I read came from the idea that the writer recalled that Dukat once said to Sisko that all their trials were determined before they even get started and this also went on to to help shape the ending of "The Defiant" when SIsko wanted to make sure that Thomas Riker wouldn't be executed for what he did so he went to prison instead.

Ok, I'll watch that video later, since we're about to go to bed here. If I made a comment that offended you, sorry. If this is all part of a bigger joke, awesome. Hopefully, I'll get it in the morning. My comment was ment as a silly joke. If it was felt as something else, I'm sorry.

So, I do a lot of tweeting and occasionally tweet to some of the Discovery crew. Surprisingly, they'll respond to me. I joked with head writer Ted Sullivan that I was pretending one of the lines from the recent trailer was a nod to DS9. Captain Lorca says, "fortune favors the bold," and he wrote back to me saying that not only did he write that line, but I was correct. He was referencing DS9. :guffaw:
