Discovery renewed for second season?

The Netflix aspect is the bit which worries me.

Paramount did such a bad job of promoting Trek outside the US for years, insisting that episodes screen behind VHS releases - a bit of profit in the short term, but little ability to grow the fanbase.

It's no wonder that box office takes for Trek films have been so US-centric compared to other films in the genre.

I've not seen any mainstream coverage of the series in Australia, and wonder how many are even aware of it.

Then again, I dread to think that people might become aware of it via Facebook or YouTube and see the comments. It's enough to turn me off Trek, because I'm embarassed to be part of that fanbase.

Which is gonna be rather bad for Discovery since they won't just need good ratings, they will need good ratings that stay stable after the premier.

Netflix doesn't care about daily ratings at all. It doesn't matter to them if you watch the show same day or a month down the line. They will care about how many new subscribers it brings in, and how many current subscribers watch it whenever.

Discovery doesn't need ratings to survive, it just needs good word of mouth.

That's par for the course for pretty much every Netflix show there is aired here, all of it on social media which means it has to in some part rely on fans to spread the word.

So you're saying Discovery is doomed?
