Discovery renewed for second season?

I'll wait until they call back the folks to start work on season two. Actors and the like. Star Trek 4 was greenlit by Paramount prior to the release of Beyond, and we see how that's working out.

Every time I see troll comments on Youtube or elsewhere saying it will fail and last 1 season I laugh hysterically.
I do the same thing when I see a post claiming CBS has renewed ST: D for a second season - and then see an update where CBS reps specifically state "It hasn't been renewed yet";)

[And again, not saying it will or will not - and I hope I enjoy the series; but yeah, with something as expensive as this is - and I'm sure the suits behind CBSAA want to see how well it draws in and RETAINS new CBSAA subscribers BEFORE they decide to go with a Second season. <--- That's how most successful businesses work; you see how the product does with the initial run before you commit to producing more.]

Just remember.. All this means is that it hasn't been officially announced. Internally is a different story. As the article claims, it'll be announced officially at some point. Also, information comes my way. ;)

One of these days Discovery is going to be renewed.

Honestly, it's a foregone conclusion. This isn't a spin-off network sitcom; CBS is investing a great deal in this project as the cornerstone of their All Access outlet and they're going to give it running room.

Guessing at that and generating clickbait articles doesn't mean that anyone has inside information or is "right." This kind of thing is part of the stock-in-trade of carnival mind-readers and cult leaders alike.

The credulous are taken in, and the ploy still fools some of the people most of the time. ;)

I bet a renewal will be announced within the first 2-3 weeks of the show. One good reason to do that is some people don't want to get into a new show if they think it will be 1 and done. Give people a reason to know it will be around and they are more likely to invest in it if they are on teh fence. As was mentioned this was a strategy GoT used.

I doubt it, announce renewal too early and if the show bombs you are stuck with a giant money pit.

It has already made money. Financially it is a success. They'll just retool it for the second season if they see issues. Much like TNG did for season three.

*It's made money for CBS.

People seem to keep ignoring the fact that Netflix is really the one on hook. And that can change really quickly. There's no reason to think they agreed to the deal without making some stipulations up front as some kind of way out. And we have no way of knowing what those are.

The reality is Netflix operates in a huge hole. They've been able to do that in the past because they've own such a large share of the market. But that share is quickly shirking, and it's a safe bet they're going to start pulling in the reins on projects within the next year.

And if Netflix drops it they are shit out of luck.

Yup.

Even if the show is profitable at that point, the smart move for CBS would be to cut bait and keep the profit they have.

The fact of the matter is CBS's endgame is to have a successful CBS streaming network, not to have a successful Trek show. So if they decide it's best to take the profit money and put it back into CBSAA with something that might be more successful, that's exactly what they'll do.

Frankly, if DSC doesn't come out of the gate swinging for the fences (Mixed sports metaphors FTW!), then season 2 with be probational at best.

It's probably going to have to be a bit more then just out of the gate.

If Netflix is smart they will probably ignore any numbers from the first episode since it's being aired on CBS and only look at the ratings from episodes that are solely on the streaming services. Which is gonna be rather bad for Discovery since they won't just need good ratings, they will need good ratings that stay stable after the premier.

Why would they care about US ratings? They aren't carrying it here. They're trying to grow their brand outside of North America.

I find it really hard to believe it's been renewed already. At this point there's just to much question about how it's actually going to be recieved for me to believe that it's already been renewed. If people love first couple episodes, and it gets huge numbers in the TV showing and brings in tons of new subscribers to CBSAA, then I could see it being renewed early in the season, but not before.

Netflix paid for international distribution rights. They literally spend billions each year obtaining content to provide to its viewer. Internationally, this includes shows that are also Netflix Original in the US (Marvel shows, House of Cards, etc.), but also many shows they purchase from US networks. In foreign countries, episodes are shown weekly (as opposed to Netflix Originals, and similar to what they are doing with Discovery.

The ratings that one episode gets on CBS in the US is not very important to Netflix since they will be an anomaly anyway - the only one that will ever have viewership numbers released and also inflated by being the series premiere.

They get decent enough viewership numbers of the previous Trek series that they tried to get the rights to do their own show, and when that didn't work out, they agreed to essentially finance Discovery. But they're really going to be looking at how their existing subscribers view/rate the show, and probably to a lesser extent, how many new subscribers they get. I say to a lesser extent, since I'm sure there are some places where they're maxing out in terms of new subscribers, and it's more about retention.
