General Computer Thread

I'll consider Linux. Though it's a notebook... I had turned a previous notebook into a dual-boot system with OpenSUSE, but I could never get some of the hardware to work right under Linux.
You don't necessarily need to dual boot - you could run Windoze in a virtual machine under either VMware Player or Oracle Virtual Box.

I might try this after I put the machine back together... The EMMC is on a plug in card that looks like a mini SATA
Is the eMMC swappable? I assume you don't need to overwrite the existing OS if you can plug in another eMMC. However, as the "e" stands for embedded, I expect not. Perhaps you can obtain a replacement card if you don't want to delete the OS or perhaps there is a way to back up and restore.

I hadn't looked into that. I'm wondering if it's indeed sata could I put an SSD in there?

No eMMC isn't swappable. It's hard wired to the motherboard which is why it gets used in devices like tablets, cellphones and low end laptops such as Chromebooks.

Plus it's slow compared to SSD devices.

Oh damn...... I was hoping it would be swappable as it plugs in. I thought the connecter was like a sata connector.

The only hardware problem I ever encountered was with pulse audio on an EeePC 701. Sort of ironic, since the LiveDVD worked fine with other computers I tested it on, yet had issues with a Netbook that was originally intended to be Linux compatible.

That is the way it goes these days, a lot of hardware is impossible to swap or repair..

and that's the price we pay for having everything so small.

Look how slim modern laptops are getting - there's no way you can having mounting for user replaceable components (ram, CPU, hard disk) and have it 1/2 and inch thick

Though I'm sure the manufacturers love it as well - much easier to standardize on components and drivers and less for the user to fuckup and try and claim on warranty.

Would also be interesting to see if computers are more reliable from hardware point of view now that everything is so tightly integrated.

I don't think reliability will improve, highly integrated stuff tends to be complex and fragile and when one thing fails you can throw away the rest as well, as for the rest, my IBM XT is 30+ years old, nothing is integrated and it still works, yes that is anecdotal but still..

True that one failure and all goes but I'm not sore sure that it's more fragile. I'm not sure the your XT would stand up to the rigours of being carried around all day in the way modern laptops and tablets are.

Plus you know that Apple won't ask you to drop it from a couple of inches above your desk tot make sure all the chips are seated properly :)

I use a trackball in preference to a mouse whenever possible; I find it faster, more accurate, and it takes up much less desk space. I also find a mouse might create too much noise for other people when I move it about as I'm somewhat heavy handed.
