I'm kind of surprised any conventions would let them take part. At this point I would think most people who run a legitimate business would stay as far away from Alec Peters and Axanar as possible. I know I would.

If the "club" misrepresented their intentions, it's not surprising that they were allowed a table. I suspect that there will be a more stringent vetting process in the future.

The legacy of Lord Precious Pants will forever taint fandom as we know it.

Oh come on. "Forever" is an awfully long time. I'm sure any impact he caused will fade. Eventually. I think two or three generations ought to do it.

As to the club, if they did "misrepresented their intentions" (aka: LIED) and got caught, it would not be at all surprising if they are now banned from all major conventions. The organizers do talk to each other about things like this.

So, banned from crowdfunding, banned from conventions, banned from the population of Trek stars (by them not wanting to be associated), banned from their own donor list (by virtue of those folks not wanting to donate anymore)... any more items to check off for a perfect gutter ball bowling round?

I expect more drama from the throne room of the Palace of Precious, very soon. :techman:

He's really kind of running out of grist for that old mill, though, isn't he?

Alec will tell you 'No!' (because he doesn't want another lawsuit.) ;)

Yeah, true. And Disney probably wouldn't stop with a settlement, like CBS did.

Very true - the mouse would crush him mercilessly. I am curious, however, how Disney is treating the Star Wars fan film industry, which has always flourished on TheForce.net and other places. Some of them were quite good (Still waiting for the next installment of I.M.P.S.! :D). I guess they're a little more well-established, with their own guidelines keeping things reigned in, but I have heard nothing on that front since all the AP stuff began.

Star Wars fan films have been operating under a five minute limit, to the best of my knowledge for several years. If I understand correctly that is for the "officially recognized" fan films that are eligible for officially sanctioned awards. (One of the reasons I have so little patience with all the whining about CBS/P's 15 minute limit). Some years ago I profiled a Star Wars fan film that ran somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes in my Examiner.com column (no longer available since Examiner's demise) that was produced by an Orlando group. It was quite good and as far as I know did not bring the big hammer out from Disney/Lucas, but I also don't think they did anything to try to commercialize it.

I saw this really slick one a few years ago, it was just two "force ninjas" fighting each other with lightsabers, but it was so well choreographed it was insane. And the lightsaber effects were spot on.

I watched a bunch of longer dramatic ones a few years ago, and some of them were really, really good.

They seem to have a common theme: we are in this *just* because we love the story.

The guidelines are the guidelines that CBS/Paramount generously gave us to work within, they actually are inline with the smaller fan film clubs.

Those films are so common, you can call those films a separate subgenre.
There is or was an annual contest just for lightsaber duel films (run by the fanfilm community).

LOL!! @ 1:22 "....when Axanar was a hot property...." Not sure about your slang down-under, but up here "hot" can mean "very popular", or it can mean "stolen".
