The music on Star Trek Discovery

It sounded like background music and a touch generic. Probably just 'mood' music, I would expect the theme to have more life in it.

I'll be mildly disappointed if it's a traditional Star Warsy orchestral theme like Goldsmith's. NuBSG, GoT, Westworld, even Farscape were more interesting and novel.

It seemed very generic and trailery. I'm pretty sure it's not the main theme, but it's also obvious it's cut from something larger. That doesn't necessarily mean anything though.

Welp, I'm reading rec.arts.startrek right now and the usual complaints about the bland music are still there. Remember, these were complaints from when the series was new. People didn't like the music then.

As for people complaining here:

"I've personally always hated the incidental music from the first couple of seasons."

"I hate the 'sonic wallpaper' sound. It's so damn boring, especially in VOY when they used it over the actors talking. It's very cheesy."

I'll just leave that there.
Don't forget that Rick Berman was the one who vouched for Jerry Goldsmith's theme from TMP to be the theme for Next Gen.

Yes, because using an existing theme was cheaper (cost wise) because they just needed to license it from Goldsmith for TNG.

It's not quite as bad as I remember (as music in general that is, it's still very bad for a TNG theme), but it sounds more like it would suit a The Last Starfighter TV series. You'd expect the opening credits to have the cast superimposed over space shots, turning to camera with cheesy smiles.

Interesting. I had not heard that. While I prefer the TMP inspired song that was eventually chosen, I don't think this version is that bad. It is essentially the same style of music as what was used in the end.

I've never heard that before either, and I definitely prefer the TMP one we ended up with. It's not bad, but like you guys said, it just feels to much like a cheesy '70s or '80s theme song.
