The music on Star Trek Discovery

It's kind of generic. I would hope they had something better as the main theme.
Yeah, I felt the same. Considering Jeff Russo is composing the music, I would be very disappointed if this was his output, especially after his creative work for Legion.

Listening to it more often now I'm actually more and more convinced this is the opening theme. Sounds very epic and heroic to me. I like it! :techman:

I'm thinking there was some editing done to move parts of the piece around so we don't hear it in sequence, but I'm thinking we're hearing a part or most of the opening theme as well!

I'm thinking the same thing that this is part of it. I expect it will start with something that sound more like courage and then move into something like this and the ending part where the ship warps out with fit perfectly with the end of he opening.

That's where I'm going with it, too. I think it will start with the classic Courage fanfare, then go into what we're hearing here.

I really do hope they start off with the classic dum dum dum... da dum dum dum dum sequence or have it incorporated somewhere because that is so classic. .

From the playing of the theme at the recent press conference, accounts of those who heard it say that the fanfare is in the theme. It seems to start with the fanfare, then has its own theme music, reminiscent of Giacchino's scores from the movies.

Wasn't the theme supposed to reflect parts of the TOS theme? There's nothing in that music to suggest this is the theme if that's true. There's one note that MIGHT be it, but from what the people that reported hearing it said, this music doesn't match up.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, I lost track of this thread.
Are you talking in terms of Russo writing his original incidental music in a more modern style, or in terms of using actual licensed pop songs in the episodes? I could live with the former (though I'd like there to be some orchestral elements in it too), but not so much the latter. I find it incongruous when present-day pop music is used to score something set in the past or future. I mean, yeah, TOS had source music (and theme music) in contemporary styles, but it was originally composed; we can just assume that future tastes circled back around to something like jazz, swing, and the like.
I was talking full on current pop music, with people like Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, Lady Gaga, ect. OK, not necessarily those exact people, but stuff along those lines.
The Kelvin movies justify it as being source "oldies" that certain characters happen to be fond of -- I guess it's sort of the equivalent of someone today liking classical music -- but it's still a bit contrived.
No, I'm not talking about the characters listening to it, I meant as part of the background music.
I do like the big full sweeping orchestral scores, but adding in some pop music brings a nice bit of variety. I also tend to find that for me at least, the right pop song to go along with a scene can bring out even more emotion than just a score.
And I'm deeply sick of the trope that's been used since the '90s where the last few minutes of each episode are largely devoted to a long music-video-ish sequence where there's a long, dialogue-free montage of the characters sitting around brooding or whatever while a pop song plays over it all. They could be telling actual story during that time!
I like that. I've heard some great songs this way, and been introduced to some artists I really like.
And only from the western hemisphere of Earth, one region on one little planet in the vast Federation.

I would love to see them bring in some music from other countries, especially if it ties back to characters from that country.
If STD is like other current shows, then there won't really be an opening theme to speak of. The logo will just flash on screen for a few seconds along with a brief identifying musical phrase.

There will be a full credits sequence. The main reason a lot of shows do that is to fit more story into the show's runtime, but with the shows on streaming services runtime isn't an issue so most of them have gone back to a full credits sequence.

Actually the shirt credit sequence is to fit in more commercials. Lol.

If someone saved a copy of Jerry Goldsmith in the transporter buffer, we need him back. Now.
