Discovery renewed for second season?

With so many shows to choose from, viewers have to pick what shows to invest their time in. If it's guaranteed they'll be a second season, I think people are more likely to give the show a try than if there was only one season on deck. (I'm talking about casual or non-Trek fans. Hardcore fans will watch regardless). People don't want to try and get into a new show if it's only going to be on for one season.

So I think announcing a second season is smart move from a marketing perspective regardless of whether or not it actually happens. Wouldn't surprise me if the CBS PR team "leaked" or created this rumor intentionally.

I think ST4 was announced prior to STB for similar reasons.

I don't know of any other show that got a second season renewal before the show even starts. Usually shows are established and even then they announce renewals early into the current season (Veep and Silicon Valley) come to mind. I'm not going to get that excited until CBS says so.

No, there have been a few - TNT's The Last Ship had a 5th season renewal and episodes for said 5th season started shooting before the first episodes of the 4th season aired <--- That said, this was an established show with a good track record - and yes, while the Star Trek franchise has been around 51 years - what they're doing here IS a new thing; so yes, while a renewal of ST: D for a season 2 wouldn't surprise me - such a renewal BEFORE even one episode has 'aired' - or CBS committing to a second season BEFORE they get any data on how well ST: D did with regard to in creasing/maintaining new subscribers for CBSAA would.

It would seem some very zealous Star Trek fans ant to cry 'raging success' before any data on HOW the public actually perceives the actual new series is gathered.

Again, I'm looking forward to the series; hope it's good, and that I like it; but to sit here and link to click-bait articles that claims 'Insiders say ST: D has already been renewed for Season 2' is IMO ridiculous. They have no more relevance then click-bait articles months ago regarding all the various production delays; and how CBS had already cancelled ST: D and that Nicholas Meyer was working with CBS on the replacement.

But that was an already established show. Has there ever been a brand new series that was renewed for a second season before the series even starts. I honestly can't think of any. Maybe a series that was part of an established franchise, but again, I would put that in the established show category.

Would be nice if it was renewed already but I don't even think critics have seen an episode yet. If they have and it's positive I can see a renewal based on that but no word if that has even happen yet. Until an official source says anything I don't think this rumor should be kept alive.

These particular links aren't the most credible, but I also think what they're claiming is a safe bet. I have felt for a long time the most likely outcome for Discovery is a season 2 renewal coming very fast after the premiere.

All those shows are on a premium channel. If the discovery news is true, that would tell me people are signing up to All Access in droves and the complaints about not signing up are coming from a loud minority.

I'm pretty sure they are indeed a loud minority. Negative thoughts tend to be the ones people are quickest to broadcast. I'm the same way: I'm twice as likely to leave a review of a book on goodreads if I didn't like it. If I leave a positive review, it's because I absolutely loved the book and want to spread the word. Those that I like, even like a lot, I tend to just rate them and move on.

The Ducktales reboot had a second season announced before the first began, IIRC.

I think this "news" is just common sense. Of course it'll get a second season, given the investment and its role as the centrepiece of All Access.

Also, I'm quite sure before The Expanse started, it was renewed for a second season before it first season aired.

Of course it's likely to be renewed. This is an easy gamble for clickbaiters trying to make a reputation: claim inside info predicting something that's probable.

It's doubtful Netflix invested the money they did just for one season. When they went all in on House of Cards, which was an expensive show at the time, they commissioned it for two seasons - I don't think they'd even seen a script at that point?

Discovery ain't going away. Netflix have invested in it knowing what it will bring to their service, based on Trek's performance for them already, so even if it doesn't get CBSAA the numbers they were hoping for, I'd assume they'll just ship it over fully to Netflix, or sweet talk them enough to ensure they keep paying for its budget. It is not in CBS' best interests to cancel the show. Not a lot all.

Wondering how many episodes we'll be getting for season 2 though. 15 again? Or the original planned 13? Or maybe even less like 10 episodes. Personally I hope they won't go below 13. As long as the quality is good, bring it on!

It could be great, I'm hoping it is. But I'm not sold on it. I think the thing that has kept me interested to this point is the talented cast.

That's fair. No series is going to appeal to everyone. It's cool you're going to give it a chance despite some reservations!
