Iron Fist (Marvel/Netflix)

Claire must be the most unfortunate living person in New York City. It's a wonder why she hasn't been in Avengers yet and just meet everyone.

So, how important is it to finish Iron Fist before I watch The Defenders? Can't really get into this show, 4 epidodes in since it was released. But I do really wanna start The Defenders, and haven't because I feel I might miss important plot otherwise.

I'm 7 episodes into this series and I'm really enjoying it so far, but I think I'm starting to agree with the opinion that Finn Jones might have been miscast. We have this almost legendary like figure and he feels too soft, especially after spending 15 years in a monastery. It feels like he doesn't know what he's doing and can't carry the series like Ritter, Cox, or Colter. Still, the supporting characters like Colleen, Ward, and Madame Gou are carrying this series so watching Jones doesn't really feel that bad.

I will say watching these shows, Jessica Jones feel so disconnected from the rest of the story, and that might be why I liked that series so much. It felt like it's own show, rather than being something much larger. I liked the Noir aspects, and David Tennant is still probably my favorite villain in the Netflix Marvel Universe (I'm not sure I would call The Punisher a villain after watching his sensational arc). Still, in regards to Iron Fist, this is a much better series than I thought it would be, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends and how we go right into The Defenders.

It helps watching Iron Fist to know who all the players are.
Also the bad guys endgame is pretty tied to Iron Fists backstory.

Yeah I know Rottentomatoes isn't really a good source of reviews, and unfortunately I have a habit of going there. I do however remember all the controversey surrounding this show and I think that might have led to the bad reviews/press and so far I don't really see it just talking in terms of the show's quality. After only seeing the first two episodes I just think it's average, but there's a lot of time to go yet.
To me, Rotten Tomatoes is still an invaluable resource. It's just important to know what it measures. It's not ranking the best movies. Instead, the best way to look at it is the chance you'll like the movie too. If 95% of critics liked a movie, there's a really good chance you will like it. If 10% of critics liked the movie, there's significantly less of a chance even if those 10% thought it was the greatest movie of all time.

Of course, a movie's likability and overall quality often go hand in hand. A movie everyone likes is often a really good movie too.

The thing to keep in mind with an aggregator like Rotten Tomatoes is that the numerical percentages are the least informative things on the site. They're attempts to boil down a wide range of viewpoints about a wide range of different aspects of a movie to a single average, and of course that's going to be too oversimplified to tell you much of anything. They should be seen as a rough first impression, nothing more. And the standards used for calculating the critic averages and general audience averages are different, so the apparent huge difference in results between the two is often illusory.

Plus, critics and fans just rate things in different ways. In the case of Batman v Superman, I think it was, there was all this reporting about how the critical average gave it 20-some percent and the fan reviews averaged much higher. But when I read many of the individual reviews, I discovered that both critics and fans were largely in agreement about what worked and what didn't work. It's just that they were weighing things differently, because critics assess a movie in terms of how well it's made, while fans are just interested in whether it's entertaining. So they both agreed that it was a very poorly structured movie that still had a lot of individually entertaining bits, but the critics put more weight on the former and the fans more on the latter. (Well, on the average. For me, it was nigh-unwatchable except when Gal Gadot was onscreen.) So the much-touted enormous divide between critical and fan reactions was all but nonexistent, an artifact of different weighting and incompatible means of calculating averages.

You know what, I just might. I just don't really feel this show yet, and I'm very curious about the Defenders

The only character of importance is Colleen and one of the baddies from Iron Fist. Everything you need to know is explained in The Defenders itself. These shows are designed to stand on their own.

I finished Iron Fist last night, and I found it somewhat enjoyable. I don't think it is as good as Daredevil and Jessica Jones (Which is still my favorite of the Marvel series) but it wasn't as bad as the reviews led me to believe. I think I liked it better than Luke Cage though, as Cage was pretty much boring throughout and they killed their best villain too early.

I think DD season 2 is the only prior show that you need to watch, although I agree that these shows are all self contained.

With respect to IF, there are some interesting things about Colleen's background that are revealed and a somewhat important individual connected to her background who does appear in DEF, but it's not imperative that you know the background of that character.

I'd argue Iron Fist is as important as Daredevil when it comes to understanding the Hand in Defenders.

I watched Defenders without watching more then about 30 seconds of Iron Fist. I did read an article about the few important things from IF (the article was made specifically so people could skip IF) but honestly I didn't even need to do that in retrospect. The only show you need to see before Defenders, in my opinion, is Daredevil Season 1 and 2. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and IF can all easily be skipped, you'll be caught up quickly on anything you need while watching Defenders in the show itself (although I'd recommend watching Luke Cage to anyone because its just a good show, and try to find clips of Tennant as Purple Man from because he was great).

Do you still have a link to that article?
