Preacher - AMC TV Show - Discussion Thread

I do like Cassidy and Denis and am not entirely sure Denis actually knows who Cassidy is (or at least they don't share an actual friendship). I think Cassidy's just imposed himself on some poor unsuspecting sod* who doesn't speak English.

* assuming I'm using that correctly, it just sounded right at the moment
I was wondering if he was going to turn out to be his son. It could explain the way they acted towards each other, especially if they haven't seen each other in decades. It's also the kind of thing shows and movies like to do with these kind of immortal characters.
This was pretty good episode, it looks like it really set us off on the main arc of the season, with Herr Star's group, and the stuff with Tulip.
The whole "looking for god" at the bar and what it lead them to were a good WTF moment.
The singer actually being with Herr Starr's guys was a nice twist.

I kind of hope Denis isn't Cassidy's dad/sire. That would kind of play into the whole "vampires in New Orleans" cliche a little too deeply.

I finally watched last week's episode yesterday, and it was definitely an interesting one.
I'm not quite sure what to make of nice guy Hitler in Hell.
That was one hell of a fight scene between Jesse and Viktor's torturer.
The big reveal with Tulip was not what I expected. I wonder what she did that was bad enough that even the girl wants to see her dead?

So, last weeks episode was not that noteworthy (IMO), but this one picks up on some very interesting notes.

Kudos to @JD who came up with the notion that Denis is Cass' son. Dead-on call with that one!

Fragmented souls for sale? Interesting concept. And Tulip asking the obvious question, "How do you know all this?" and Jesse answers "Family Business"??? The soul can be extracted through the bloodstream? Where is it located? It seems to be blocking a rather large artery. Really loving the props in this show, too. From the angel-hand God-phone to the soul extractor and other related gadgets.

Nice double-cross to get the soul into the Saint and, in doing so, making him susceptible to The Word. We will definitely see him again, as I figure Jesse will want that piece of his soul back so it doesn't disappear down into Hell permanently.

Has Tulip been changed somehow by being touched directly by the Saint? There seems to be some lingering after-effects there that will lead into the next episode. If so, does Denis as well? They seem to be the only two (other than the little girl) who survived an encounter with him - barely.

Now, granted, it's been a REALLY long time since I read the original books (and nice homages to the original book artwork in telling the Saint of Killers story) but so far as I can tell, they are seriously deviating from what's come before. Not sure if they thought this would be better for a TV medium, but it's kind of curious some of the decisions they're making. I wonder if the Saint's backstory regarding his first arrival in Hell is still a part of this universe. Is there still the same significance of his pistols in this, how they came to be, and from what were they forged? They play a VERY big role in the later part of the story (literally, in the end, on the very last page). In fact, the way Hell is depicted is completely different than in the books. I really like a lot of the concepts being shown here - the cells with the repeating (and consistently malfunctioning) torment projectors, but they're definitely taking massive liberties and poetic license from the original story.

Next week we'll finally be seeing Herr Starr, maybe the Allfather and their organization. But now I'm wondering if their backstory and purpose for existence has also been drastically altered from their original state. Either way, still looking forward to that.

Watched last week's this morning, and it was an interesting one.
The whole souls for sale thing was interesting, and I'm really curious about Jesse's comment about it being a family business.
Cool, I was right about Denis. I wonder if we'll get to learn more about what exactly happened between him and Cassidy?
It will be interesting to see what effect losing part of his soul will have on Jesse. His double cross of The Saint was a nice twist, but I'm thinking when he pops back up he'll be really pissed. I thought it was interesting that it was apparently his lack of a soul that made him immune to The Word.

Amazing episode tonight. They nailed Starr in all his glorious sadomasochistic weirdness. Probably one of the most accurate portrayals of an original character from the books and the training backstory was fantastic.

Gotta wonder why the Vietnamese family was freaking out and then all of a sudden all happy with a floating pig. What made it float? The wayward God or something else? The video of Fake God that Jesse was watching mentioned the confusion of animals during the end of days. I think that a floating pig qualifies.

French professor seemed pretty unimpressed by Denis' odd statements and request for Cassidy. The shooting club scam was quite enjoyable to watch but Tulip definitely seems to be loosing her marbles for having been touched by the Saint. She's gonna be really pissed at Jesse when she finds out Saint is still alive. She seems to have a connection with him since the touch and I think suspects that Jesse didn't send him to Hell.

Well, we now know how Starr would handle Okja.

They did a good job making an interesting story from character driven moments more than plot this time. Jesse and Tulip are both dealing with feeling they've lost a part of themselves while Cassidy deals with gaining a bit of humanity with his feelings towards Tulip and Denis.

I don't know the comics but I get a sense they've deviated a ways from it but it doesn't seem to be in a conventional direction. Who would've thought Seth Rogen might spawn something like this.

Yep - they're deviating in LOTS of ways. :) However, they are deviations that still fit within the spirit of the original, in that they could still believably fit within the universe without being too far gone. I haven't found anything, really, that has been glaringly bad. I do wish they hat gotten more into the metaphysical nature of the Saint, his weapons, how they were made (and from what), and his time in hell.

I really love this show. II like shows that are always a little surreal but you can still be interested in the characters for the normal reasons you care about tv characters. Also I just one to note I laughed at the Atlanta Falcons, Super Bowl Champion shirt that one kid was wearing. Funny shirts are a underated comedy goldmine. Like the vampire wearing a "Hanson" t-shirt on "Buffy" or the Jeff Goldblum wearing a "I'm a Pepper" shirt in "Life Aquatic" or Kirk's shirt in "Final Frontier" or Cisco's ,Han shot first, shirt in season 1 of "Flash."

I doubt this is the last we've seen of him, so there's probably still time to get into that later.
Wow, I haven't read the comics, so this was my first experience with Herr Starr, and he is definitely one creepy, twisted bastard, which means he's the perfect villain for this show. He was definitely highlight of the episode.
The gang scamming the guys shooting each other in the bar was fun, and it was interesting seeing Tulip dealing with her encounter with The Saint. I was wondering if her reaction was just more due to her almost being killed, rather than anything specific to The Saint.
We also got some interesting stuff with Cassidy and Denis now that we know what their relationship is. I wonder if we'll get to learn any more about their history. It looked to me like Cassidy was reconsidering Denis's request after seeing the family at the morgue.

Wow, did I hear things or did they not bleep Adolf fucking Hitler? After all the warning about no trusting him, I'm starting to wonder if he is going to end up double crossing Eugene somewhere along the line.
So Herr Starr wasn't to have Jessie replace the mentally handicapped Messiah, I did not see that coming.
That big God reveal was unexpected, I love how what seemed like a random moment of WTFery has turned out to be a HUGE moment for the story.

I think AMC has done it before with Breaking Bad and others, it allows very sparing usage for special situations. Syfy has surprisingly allowed very liberal usage of the F-bomb on its new (and awful) series Blood Drive.

I've been surprised with Starr, I like that he's not just a one-dimensional "Destroy them!" villain. I think someone called it but I was also surprised that Jesse's search has led him back to DOG.

"Mr Robot" also uses the F-bomb so much that even though they kind of edit it, it doesn't feel very edited to me.

The Magicians on Syfy edits them so badly it seems like it must be intentional. Blood Drive is the first I've seen where they let them fly without even the token attempts to edit them out.
