Middle-Easterners in "Discovery"

The one exception might be submariners as their life is pretty heavily regulated. But it's a safe bet that starship life would be nothing like that.

Also, since when were religion and culture mutually exclusive?
In fact, during the Era in which Discovery is set, starship life is pretty much exactly like serving on a submarine, albeit slightly more spacious, and with science labs.

It's pretty clear that humans are not exempt from racism, and cultural differences, this runs through most Trek episodes, and minimal group paradigms are well known, well researched phenomena. Of course on a Federation starship, your shipmates are part of your group and so any racial tension is likely to be directed elsewhere.

I would imagine that for senior officers with their own quarters, there would be more leeway for cultural expression and practices. Maybe not so much for those in the cramped shared bunk areas like in STVI:TUC.

I think STVI:TUC was the exception and not the rule. Even in TOS' time - the assignments stretched YEARS into deep space - so it would be like living in a prison if you at least didn't get a small private room/cabin on board a Starship for personal privacy. (I believe even now in the U.S. Navy submarine and other tours are usually 6 month deployments at a time?<-- That you can probably handle shared bunking areas.)

I'd say a lot more spacious, especially in common areas like corridors, rec rooms and gyms.

The TOS episode where Kirk meets Lincoln (The Savage Curtain?) and Uhura response when he calls her 'negress' that words are no longer matter or something similar, well if anyone had any doubt you can tell that was definitely written by a white person.

I don't see the problem with that. Why can't humans evolve to ignore words?

Because words communicate the attitude of the speaker.

From in-universe perspective what Unura says makes perfect sense. Some ancient slur from centuries old social context that is not applicable to her life in any way doesn't probably mean anything to her. However, in the world of the viewers of the show such words do matter very much, and intentional or not, the line kinda communicates that the problem with racism in the modern world is that those who are insulted are just too touchy! (Hint: that's not the problem, the racists are the problem.)

Because we would be dead inside. Words are our greatest tools, but to be so they must also be weapons. It would be a very bland and uncreative world, incapable of achieving or describing the wonders of space travel if we stopped being emotively connected to words.

There is a few depictions found in TUC that are anachronistic - giant fancy dining room anyone?

Well yes, on modern TV it wouldn't fly, I mean in context of the universe itself.

In the olden days of my youth when someone called me something I didn't like
I'd say, " sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me!"

My mother, from the Neolithic period I think, taught me that.
Seems that nobody under a certain age
Knows that saying.
That saying is a myth, words are powerful, ask any politician or voter. There is a reason why the laws for libel and slander exist.

We know it, we just also learnt that it's nonsense. Just because something is a saying doesn't mean it's wise. Words can and do cause great hurt, start conflicts and end them, build and destroy relationships, turn fellow human beings into animals and raise others to demi gods, separate superiors and inferiors, give and deny respect and dignity, and build and reinforce divisions.

So you're saying white american males are the highest standard?

Well, the treatment of white American males is about as good as it gets. The world kisses our butts.

If everyone were treated as well - not the same, but given the same opportunities and treated equally to us and given the same benefit of the doubt in legal and social situations, etc - that would be a pretty good deal.

But Why?
If you are called a name, can't you just ignore it?
