Post-season 3, I found Jake Sisko outstandingly annoying and rather unlikeable as a human being. To the point that it almost defies belief that Captain Sisko, caring as he was, wouldn't have disowned him as a son. (Ok, that's hyperbole.)

Some characters are meant to be unlikeable, of course. But I don't the writers intended Jake to be such a twerp. I hate to say this too, but he couldn't have been so unlikeable without Cirroc Lofton being a bona fide terrible actor too.

I love DS9. Have watched the whole series probably 5 times.

Anyone else despise Jake Sisko? :-)

I thought it was good he had some rebellious qualities like many teens do. He even wanted to stay on the station when the Dominion took over.

So I liked him. It would've been easy to write the character as a strong, confident, mini-Sisko ready to walk in Dad's Starfleet Command footsteps.

Instead, he's complex. He makes mistakes. He's smart, and yes -- fairly dramatic and annoying, but he's a real character. And he commands his father's love and respect regardless of his path, which makes the Sisko character better, as a result.

So do I like Jake Sisko? Not particularly. Do I like his character and place in the show? His character development? Definitely.

He was much less annoying to me than that Crusher kid.

He was less annoying than Harry Kim and Tom Paris by a lot.

I don't see what's so unlikable about Jake. He was genuinely friendly and outgoing, and always meant well.

Unlike Wesley, Jake was not an annoying holier-than-thou arrogant jackass.

If someone didn't like Jake, I can only imagine what they'd think of Wesley...

Jake seemed to me like a real teen, with goals of his own that weren't necessarily emulating Dad. He made mistakes, overestimated himself, and learned things.

He was absolutely awful in Valiant, but aside from that I never had an issue with him. That was just a horribly-written episode.

I liked him just fine. Some people just don't like some characters, it happens.

Maybe I'm misremembering the episode, but wasn't Jake the voice of reason in “Valiant” and Nog the one with questionable motives?

I found him annoying in the first season. I don't mean by that he was badly written or anything, it's just that I usually find kids drama to be annoying.

But the character development was good and he was worthy in his role as war correspondent. I think ultimately though he lost out towards the end of the run because writers had too many loose ends to tidy up. .

I'm a Jake fan, I like how he's always a bit of a fuck-up. Even though I wanted to see him slightly more than we did, I thought it helped that they used him REALLY sparingly. Fun Memory Alpha trivia: Jake is only in 71 of 173 DS9 episodes. Morn is in 92 episodes.

Plus two series highlights are Jake episodes: "The Visitor" and "In The Cards."

On that note, does anyone know why that was? What was the deal with Cirroc Lofton's contract? How was he ostensibly a regular despite appearing in less than half the series?

He's like Andrew Robinson, not a full on regular. They had a large cast of regular actors and yet they still managed to give even semi-regular actors a presence so powerful, that even today we're amazed that they weren't full time.
