Roberto Orci's Star Trek 3

Kamdan

Commander
Red Shirt
Anyone ever catch what his idea was for the third film that he was supposed to direct?

He made comments on Twitter that it was about a group of Vulcans who are trying to restore the timeline, and the Enterprise crew are sent to stop them but have to decide whether or not they should. However at other times afterwards he's said that he can't reveal anything so it's hard to tell if he was joking about that story.

The Enterprise, a Vulcan ship and a new alien ship competing for an artefact which could manipulate time/restore Vulcan. Some reports (including a tweet from Bob Orci) say Kirk Prime was involved, others say Shatner would play an aged version of Pine's Kirk.

I suspect Patrick McKay and JD Payne (Orci's writing partners) were rewriting the story to feature Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk in place of William Shatner when ST4 was announced last year.

If JJ had directed ST3 think we'd have got Orci's script. or had Orci not wanted to direct (with Lin directing as happened) paramount might've still used his script. When he was confirmed as director it all fell apart..(guess Paramount must've gotten coldfeet about him directing and then maybe he wasn't keen on someone else directing his script?)

I feel studio read his script and punted, leading to Pegg/Jung writing STB in under 6 months to make timetable.

Orchi's script, if this was true, was horse shit to quote Wormhole. Had ST Insurection part 2 written all over it......

Shatner returning as Kirk Prime trying to restore the Prime Universe, Quinto Spock conflicted between his loyalties to the Kelvin timeline and the opportunity to restore Vulcan, stupid horseshit.

I thought it was meant to be Shatner and Nimoy :'( as old Pine and Quinto from their future?

Orci originally only envisioned a trilogy for this cast, so this was how he planned to end that trilogy.

That makes sense.

They've tried to get Shatner-Kirk (or Mirror Universe or Kirk's ancestor who has to play Kirk etc) back so many times since Generations and it fell though, either through creative differences or Shatner wanting a higher fee. It's like a curse - there's something in the air stopping this happening! Apart from a skit with Seth MacFarlane at the Oscars...

Maybe in Trek4 somehow if they're using the time travel thing?! Even if there is George Kirk

Just done some research - Orci's 3 was due to shoot February 2015, the month Nimoy died, so he would have been reliant on the oxygen mask and the script would have to have been rewritten so Old Spock wouldn't have appeared anyway :(

Back in the Cinefantastique days altman&gross would've been all over what happened with Orcis Trek3 for a double issue and unofficial making of book

There will probably be articles/script reviews on it someday, it happened with other unmade movies (Last of the Titans, The First Adventure, The Beginning)

not fun going back to this article which hopes for star trek 3 to finally break a billion dollars given the poor performance of the finished product. but it discusses the alleged plot and one of the reasons orci left.

more details here covering orci's battle with the studio.

it's interesting that they got so far along that they had to dismiss production designers when orci left. it's been discussed here before but this is the reason star trek beyond carried such a high price tag, orci's aborted film factored into the budget.

i like the idea of capping off the trilogy, but not with shatner showing up. this series needed to carve out its own niche, i think it did that nicely with star trek beyond, though it was likely one movie too late for that.

Wow - I just remembered I was prepared to hate ST Beyond, thought it would be a disaster and had no faith in Lin.

Turned out I loved it!

i know right? i love the list of potential directors there and no one said a word about lin until he was hired. i was hoping for almost every director there except lin and now i'm rooting for him to return if there's another one.
