If it does well I could see them doing some other stories (like the rumored khan mini-series) in the star trek universe as little one-offs similar to the "a star wars story" line of movies.

And yet millions of people do that for Game of Thrones. Please.

HBO also costs more than $6 a month. ;) [But yeah, I get it. IMO all streaming services are overpriced atm,]

I still think CBS should merge CBS All Access with Showtime's OTT service. That way you also get Shameless, Billions, etc. Yeah, it would probably cost a little more, but there would be more incentive for the casual fan on the fence about DSC to subscribe. If anything, add some of the Showtime's back catalogue... or at least whatever they still have rights to. As well as CBS Films, and whatever else they have in their library.

Totally not hating on DSC... I can't wait for it to premiere. I'm just sayin'...

I'm excited about this new show, but I'm going to wait before I decide to subscribe to the service. I already have Netflix and Hulu and I'm not getting a third.

Now if Angela Bassett had been cast as the captain and the show focused on her arc, then that would have been a different story.

I just read that Disney is going to pull all thier stuff from Netflix in 2019 and do thier own streaming service. This is why I am not surprised a show like Discovery is going to streaming only. We're on our way for all networks to be doing this, and then we have a glorified a la Carte system.

I hope they are ready for a lot of failed ventures because we will have too many streaming services and not enough cash in peoples wallet.

Like many industries we are going to see an expansion phase in the next few years. we already have disney and WB both planning streaming services and I'm sure there are more to come. Then we'll have some kind of consolidation phase. There may be a few that fail outright but I think that will be a small number. Most will likely be absorbed or somehow packaged together.

Which is overrated (IMO). I pretty much figured out the 'twist' a number of episodes before they revealed it. I also this the 'boosted to super-intelligence' android story was somewhat of a trope; but was at least happy to see there was in fact safeguards to prevent her from getting into the 'real world'. There was also many of the usual 'rouge AI' tropes throughout too. But again, that's me.

If it was horrible I'd expect him not to tout it at all.

The one thing I'll never understand is people complaining about paying $6 to watch one show.

For decades cable TV was charging over $100 for service that included tons of channels most people didn't want or ask for. When I had cable I had to pay the price for a bigger package just so I could get Sci-Fi. Some people had to pay for Showtime and Cinemax just so they could get HBO. Others had to pay for sports packages that included 30 extra channels just so they could watch the one channel that carried their favorite team's games.

And in those cases we're talking about $100 or more a month! Sometimes close to $200! As a teen I can think of maybe FIVE channels my family watched regularly on cable (Discovery, Sci-Fi, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and the regional sports network)... yet to get them we had to pay nearly $150 a month and wound up with 200 channels we never watched.

Now we're in an age where we can pick and choose: $10 for Netflix, $10 for Hulu, $10 for Amazon, and now $6 for CBS. And you can watch the shows whenever you want, over and over, you can choose which episodes to watch, view old shows, movies, etc.

    I don't get the complaint.

Yeah, so basically $50 for 6 channels (and you have to have high speed internet with no data caps if you want to view HD content.) -- so sorry if I really don't see that as a lot better.

Well, they also have a lot of news/political shows as well, if you're into that. Plus the occasional serious documentary.

Personally, I'm going to wait for the reviews. Not itching to pay money for the network that cancelled Limitless and Person of Interest.

Exactly. Been saying this very thing for a while. I'm not sure CBS will be one to succeed long-term. I could however, see WB, Paramount, and CBS consolidate, considering their regular working relationship on the CW. A streaming service with content from all four of those entities could be quite successful.

Disney is pretty much the only sole company that could probably thrive with it's own network, as they own ABC, ESPN, Disney XD, and more.

Be sorry, because you're very short sighted and not seeing the forest for the trees. That 50 dollars gets you content from dozens of networks/channels, premium movies, documentaries, kids and adult programming, and all at your fingertips and on-demand.
