"We Boldly Go" - first commercial

That only makes any sense if people had a choice between CBS All Access and Netflix for watching Discovery but they don't. People will be watching the show on whichever platform is available in their country, i.e. CBS for the US and Netflix for everyone else except Canada.

You don't want to make somebody have to look up and figure out what channel the show is on or assume they already know. You need to tell them.

I am hoping that these trailers are just trying to attract new - non trek viewers, and that is why they are how they are.

I would like the actual show to deliver something more in the spirit of trek. And if not, then I can always find comfort in TNG, DS9, VOY, and a few episodes of ENT

I don't get optimism from that promo. It's posed and dramatic and dark. Interesting order of characters with the 'star' character getting the best close up and longest shot.
The words and the message seem optimistic...

...A future that is not bound by fear, a mission of discovery rather than conquest,
a destiny written in the stars, going boldly...

Those words spoken in that promo are all pretty optimistic Star-Trekky stuff.

Different tastes then. I took a lot more optimism from this promo than the last couple. I at least enjoyed this one more.

Ok that makes no sense. Because the promo is on the Internet. So they can state Coming Soon and then link it to a website on details about the show without mentioning who will broadcast it. It can state 'to be determined on a later date'. Not that difficult.

a trailer/promo is there to create interest. By banning the awareness of the show its existence, it doesn't really help the marketing in the country and plays into the internet downloading methods of the show that aren't endorsed by any Broadcaster.

That is also the reason why most movie industries launch their movies on the same date globally.

but what ever.
Why would CBS All Access not want to mention who will be broadcasting it?

The point of Star Trek: Discovery is to help sell CBS All Access subscriptions, and this promo is probably also meant to raise awareness for CBSAA in the U.S. as much as it is to raise awareness for the show. So the CBS All Access banner is a vital part of that ad.

And in a market where Netflix paid for the rights to show DSC, I doubt they want their potential customers to see that ad with CBS AA banner and possibly be confused over how the show can be watched.

Maybe I saw it the way I saw it because it wasnt a war or action trailer. It felt in the spirit of Star Trek to me. I would say if the first two were trying to appeal to non trek fans, this one was trying to appeal to the trek fans, maybe even those worried this will be war all the time.

Same here.

That's probably nonsense. They're not trying to selectively appeal to fans and non-fans. They're trying to do some type of bullshit stealth marketing where the don't reveal a "secret" about the show. In this case, it seems to be the Discovery and its mission.

Show the damn ship! Show something about what this series is about! All I know from EVERY preview combined is that it involves meeting the Klingons and a bunch of ships get destroyed.

And to be frank (even thought that's not my name): this type of marketing is EXCLUSIVELY to fans. The casual viewer doesn't give a tribble about the relations between Starfleet and the Klingons. Why would they? If you don't have a horse in the race, why bet?

This is pandering to the fans, and they're basing the advertising campaign on the "don't reveal" tactic, as if that will drive more people to watch. I don't think it will, especially for a TV audience.

Boy don't you just love it when someone calls your opinion and feeling nonsense and then goes on a rant about pandering. I guess the tribe has spoken, as it were.

On a serious note, I just got back from a Star Trek convention and after seeing what I saw, I say pander away. I feel more better about the series now than I did 2 weeks ago. If that is nonsense to you than I don't know what else to tell you.

Or non fans don't care what the ship looks like and are more interested in who they'll be watching come the autumn. There are the recognisable faces in that bunch, plus a weird alien to set the sci-fi feeling. That's what will draw in non Trekkies, not glory shots of the ship.

Not sure, because in ENT, "Where no man has gone before" was a direct quote from ZC, so I'm thinking this variation may be for the commercial. Good thought, though.

Why do quotes need to be direct? She's loosely quoting ZC, who in turn was loosely quoting James Killian. I imagine it's become a Starfleet tradition to reference this line whenever someone creates "a new way to fly". :)

What I find interesting is that they still haven't done a full reveal of the discovery bridge.

Well of course I am. And you've got a thread about how many digits stardates have. Overthinking is our business. That's why we're on this board.

No, it was just a thought. I wasn't overthinking anything, just a thought about how something would be done since it chronologically pre-dates TOS stardates.
