I find BenCum pretty overrated to be honest. He's fine a lot of the time, but I've also thought his Khan and Strange were pretty average. (The latter mostly due to his weakness with accents.) The quieter Khan moments were okay, but I really didn't dig his underbite-and-massive-over-enunciation style.
NO ship should GO DOWN withOUT her CAP-TAIN.
Now I'm reminded of Doctor Bashir in the S1 DS9 episode The Passenger, the one where he's possessed by the alien villain and takes over a freighter. "I AM fit AS a fidd-DILL."

Dude's probably the whitest guy alive. Probably not the best choice to play a character named Khan Noonien Sing. Should've made the role an original character.

They did, original drafts actually used the new character of John Harrison, renegade Starfleet officer turned terrorist. Lindelof then stepped in and requested John Harrison become Khan.

I would have preferred John Harrison instead, but it's not like surgical alternations are foreign to Star Trek.

More or less. I believe his name was actually John Ericson all the way up to post production.
Maybe an homage to the original name of the Khan character in "Space Seed": John Ericssen aka Ragnar Thorwald.

Did I like Bennie's acting? Yes. It was a highlight in the movie, and he brought some measure of dread to the character.

Did I like the character of Khan? No. Not a huge fan of the original Khan either, really, but I really mean this as a seperate character, not compared to the original.

Right because having a Mexican playing a character of Indian descent is better. ;)
While Montalban actually experienced discrimination in Hollywood due to anti-Latino prejudices, he could be described as just as white as Cumberbatch, since both of his parents had immigrated from Spain.

Montalban was in brownface makeup for "Space Seed," but not for TWOK. When I was younger, I always wondered why he looked so pale in TWOK compared to when we first saw him. That must have been a pretty harsh environment on Ceti Alpha V!

Well, remember said environment also turned ALL Khan's followers hair blonde in STII:TWoK ;)

I guess that way, it makes Khan's true ID unexpected (if not to us, to the characters). I suppose they could have hired an actor of Indian descent and given him an alien alias rather than "John Harrison".

I feel certain the John Ericson name was selected specifically after they decided to make the character Khan. Given the name is the name of the character who eventually became Khan in early drafts of the Space Seed script, it really would be coincidental if they named an original character for STID that and he later became Khan.

But I concede that the early drafts of STID likely didn't call the renegade Starfleet officer turned terrorist John Harrison either.
