I am torn on the uniforms. They're sharp and look like actual uniforms (in a Golden Age of Sci-Fi kinda way), but there is zero reconciling them to both what came before and after in the Prime timeline.

(Honestly, though, my favorite uniform--outside of the First Contact mess dress uniform--is the TWOK jacket. That tidbit shows my strong bias towards military style wear.)

I rather like the saucer of the ship, but not the stardrive section. At all.

Interesting, because this matters not one bit to me.

Also, you're contradicting yourself completely, as the TWOK outfits were nothing like anything seen before in Trek, as well as the STTMP uniforms...as were the STNG uniforms after that...and the ENT uniforms...oh well.

I never said I liked the TOS uniforms. I don't. The Abrams movies made the look a bit more tolerable. It does bother me a little that there's no evolutionary path from the DSC uniforms to the TOS ones, though, especially since that's what is supposed to replace them in less than a decade.

Although, all would be forgiven, if they skipped the TOS style and went straight to TWOK. ;-)

Well it's a reimagining, so in effect, we are to assume the TOS uniforms will evolve from DSC. Though in reality, uniforms don't have to evolve from anything, they can be completely different.

I like the design. I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers.

I'm being a little facetious here, but you can always headcanon this to that the Enterprise and Discovery were under different branches of Starfleet, explaining the differences of uniforms - the Enterprise under the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and the Discovery under Space Command. But by 2266 Starfleet uniforms were streamlined so that all branches wore the same uniforms. Just throwing that out there!

Uniforms and fashion rarely follow an evolutionary path. It's more like a punctuated equilibrium.

Also, could you explain the evolutionary path from TOS to TMP?

You know how when you procrastinate and wait until the last minute to buy Easter Egg dye and the only colors they have left are pastels instead of primaries? Same thing happened to Starfleet on change the uniforms day.

Aside from how it fits into the Trek timeline I don't find it very appealing aesthetically. It kind of feels a bit "spindly" and weak for lack of a better term.

Ha-ha that's a great example. I hadn't thought it like that :D

Is it possible to get some better terms? Because I really don't follow.

Nacelles are very long and thin (unsubstantial), join between primary hull and secondary not substantial enough (breakage point). Cut outs in primary hull make that part look weaker also. If there is some story explanation, like it is a super-fast exploration ship that is lightly built I could accept it's looks but if I were walking down a line of starships presented as sculptures it would not be my favorite. Personal opinion.

Oh, it's not my favorite, not by a long shot. But I would not describe it as "spindly" because most of the Federation designs that have been shown have utilized what I could describe as "spindly" and then you have the "structural integrity field" for other support to the superstructure. So, apparently "weaknesses" to my eyes (trained in Legos, as I am) are not relevant in this context.

They use the same rank stripes from TOS, along with some of the same division colors. Also, most of the uniform variants are essentially a T-shirt and trousers. Punctuated equilibrium is right though. There's really more revolution than evolution in the "history" of Starfleet uniforms.
