He did say he enjoyed Heir to the Empire - and then proceeded to slate the people in charge of Star Wars Rebels for ruining the character of Thrawn. But that's about it that comes to mind *shrugs*

Here's the full Press SDCC Discovery Panel from 7/22/17 - (The Panel itself starts about 6:44 into the video):

It's a massive red flag that she might be. It's something you expect from fanfic writers, not professionals.

I liked her fine. This makes me like her less. Or rather, like the writing less. She is a more interesting character being just some Earth woman who was raised on Vulcan or trained at the Vulcan Science Academy. Making her Spock's step-sister is pointless. It adds nothing to the character, raises a few unanswerable questions, and makes the writers look like amateurs. Sarek as a mentor, great. Sarek as step-father, goofy fanfic.

Since I haven't seen the story I cannot conclude one way or the other as to whether or not it is fan fiction.

Secondly, "Mary Sues" occur in both professional and non-professional writing. I don't "expect" anything from professionals any more. I treat each production as its own thing.

These are the kind of people one should just steer clear of. Either they're intentionally trolling, or they really are that negative and giving them attention will just suck you into their web of negativity.

 Seriously, again with the Mary Sue shit? Is this The Force Awakens all over again? Are we going to do this every time a woman features as the hero of a story now?

    Star Trek fans. LOL

If I wasn't one myself, I'd spend a lot of time poking fun at them. Well, in fact, I do. Star Trek fans who disagree with my point of view though are almost always wrong. :p

Well, not so sure about Wonder Woman fandom with regard to this particular gender based subject. ;)

I don't think Rey was a Mary Sue. Being the secret relative of a pre-existing character who's a fan favorite is a clue that the character might be a Mary Sue, not a guarantee. I'd prefer that Rey isn't secretly the child of one of the OT main cast. Likewise, I'd prefer that Michael isn't another one of Spock's secret siblings.

Fandoms are weird. I'm over on a Doctor Who forum cheering that they've finally cast a female Doctor, but over here I'm being painted with a broad brush for having a concern about the new series' writing.

It's Mary Sue if the heroine's being introduced into an already-established series and proceeds to totally upstage the already-established heroes. Michael's not that, as this particular series is based around her from the start. And there's certainly nothing idealized/perfect (the other major ingredient) about her either; indeed, it sounds like she's gonna be one hell of a screw-up to begin with.

Right. And I'm not saying she is a Mary Sue, I'm just really concerned that she might be with this secret sibling bullshit. And if that's a quote that was misheard or taken out of context, great. My concern vanishes.

I get the knee jerk reaction of defend everything against people you perceive to be attacking everything, but there is a middle ground. There is such a thing as valid criticism. Likewise, unbridled optimism. And they can both coexist, in the same fan even. It's not an either or proposition.

Why does anyone "hate watch" anything? Why is that a thing with a name?

Were you this upset over his secret half brother? His parents who not even the captain knew where his parents? Vulcan live a long, long time, and go into what is basically heat every 8 years. Him only having a single child or even just too seems odd to me in a 200+ year lifespan.

Can someone tell me how DSC is "ruining" Trek? If you download it or stream it does the rest of the Trek collection vanish?
