RAMA isn't the one being insulting here, it is those that go really low by saying these costumes look cheap, ridiculous, 'worst design ever', etc. This goes beyond substantiated criticism, this is just downright degrading towards the people involved and those that do appriciate it.

Those that say the Klingon costumes look cheap and lousy, they are more than welcome to try and replicate these to the last detail. Then they'll see how cheap and lousy the costumes are.

They don't look cheap. They look shit.

So far, Discovery's production design is extremely uneven. When it's good, it's really good. Some of the best yet, even. But when it's bad, it looks really bad. Not cheap though, everything looks extremely careful and costly crafted, which I'm extremely content with. It's just a shame to witness some so extreme wrong choices.

For now, the new Klingons look pretty silly to me. What they look like in the show, with the (actor's) character in full scenes, is when we'll see what it really looks like.

I don't see anything that is really objectionable in their appearance. But, you are right. It won't matter until we see it in motion.

You mean, so many choices you don't like.

Well, yeah, of course. Me and others.
On the stuff that works (the phasers, the new transporter room, hell, the Shenzhou) you'll be really hard pressed to find a single, negative comment. There are always some. But they are the clear minority.

On the other stuff though - the klingon costumes, the new Discovery design - you'll find the reaction about 50% - 50% positive/negative. With a majority of the positives being "I'm slowly warming up to things". Meaning not even them liked it when they saw it the first time (Which a really good prop should definitely do! Most people see those things only once)

Now the production values are amazing. So it's not a lack of budget (in the past, when Trek looked silly it was often because it was visibly how cheap something was made). DIS will have these problems also, but later for their one-off design work for single episodes. Right now, they only present the really expensive, show-off-y stuff. And when that looks bad, that's the result of someone, somewhere just making a wrong decision.

When that is the case is of course very subjective. But it's pretty objective, some stuff of DIS' production design works much better than others.

Their foreheads (which seems to be what matters to Star Trek TV show makers in the past 30 years) look like TMP, TNG, and DS9 Klingon foreheads.

What I mean is, they look [for the most part] like Klingons.

This has always been the case when things change with Trek.

Jesus, how touchy some people are. I'm not dissing your mom, I'm dissing these ugly costumes!

Here is a good picture of the two new costumes side by side. Whilst I'm not terribly fond of either, the one on the right is substantially better. It looks like it is made out of metal and leather, and the metal actually looks like real metal. The grey mess on the left is another story though. I'm not even sure what sort of material it is supposed to look like. It is coloured silver, but those armour plates do not look like metal and the spikes don't look solid or sharp.

It's supposed to be made of exotic alien materials that don't look quite like anything we are familiar with on Earth. This is science fiction, after all.

And I like the one on the left a lot better. The one on the right has a little too much "Bride of Chaotica" Saturday afternoon pulp serial thing going on with that spiderweb pattern.

Isn't that description of the reddish female uniform, not this one?
In any case, even if it is made out of leather, why the fuck to spray paint it silver? It utterly destroys any feel of material it might have had, and makes it look like foam core.
The Female one is grey

Unless the guy on twitter uploaded the images in the wrong order.

Edit: Ah he did, here is the one for the grey one

The description is nearly the same though.
