The klingons look even better than we thought

@startrekchina: Just look at these Klingon armours... #StarTrekDiscovery https://twitter.com/startrekchina/status/888100318285660161/photo/1

And the award for literally the worst designs of both Aliens and Uniforms in any official Star Trek go to: Star Trek Discovery :barf:

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Fans are talking about the Klingons, who have been redesigned again, and Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Aaron Harberts explained that change is...

Oh, so stupidity and trying to be "different" for no reason, aka they wanted to make their own original Sci Fi show but are using the Star Trek license to trick viewers into watching, like the 70s Incredible Hulk show that was made by a guy who actually really disliked the source material. Maybe this is all some weird plan to save Brannon and Braga from being the "villains" of Trek. I certainly find it hard to complain about Enterprise when confronted with garbage like this.

I literally don't understand how people can be impressed by this. Sure, the space armour is stunning, but this grey uniform is obviously foam and cloth spray painted silver, it looks really cheap. Pretty much all Klingon uniforms from TMP onward look better than this.

The probable answer is "on TMP, leather, after that vinyl." Fletcher enjoyed his TMP budget.
Mostly vinyl even then, according to the Star Trek Costumes book. And the TMP costumes got a lot of use, they were being rolled out well into TNG's run before they literally fell apart. The costumes in Heart of Glory are the TMP ones, and Gowron is still wearing one in Sins of the Father, and Kurn is wearing Kruge's from Search for Spock.

The Cardassian outfits were a bit more believable as armor than the Klingons - if we ever see any Cardassians, it's fun to imagine how much farther the new designers can take them.
I always liked the (second) Cardassian costume, it's one of my favourites. It's flexible, but still manages to look like armour, and it looks nicely distinctive too - no chance of mistaking them for anyone else even as a blurry background extra.

Why you don't understand is probably because you haven't seen this on screen, in action, in motion... Imagine we got a glimpse of Darth Vaders costume first before seeing him in action, hearing his voice, etc. It probably would never come across as powerful then. I'm trying the envision this costume in a scene, with proper lighting, within a scene... If you cannot do that, you will probably never understand... In essence, a photograph as such is taking something out of context, and unfortunatly, it results in a lot of extreme negativity from people who 'just won't understand'...

I agree. I've seen lots of costumes, ship models and props that when seen in person looked utterly underwhelming, plain and cobbled together.

But those same things, on screen, under lighting and finished film, looked completely amazing.

People drool over lightsabers in Star Wars movies. You'd have a different opinion looking at the camera flash handle with chrome model car parts glued onto it that it really is in person.

I'm thinking that award should be shaped like a big ugly canon ball =)

But we have seen the Klingon costumes on screen in the trailer. It's not a long look but it counts.

Personally I think some of the designs are really good. Fore instance the d’k tahg is great being much more detailed. I always thought Klingons should have much more ornate styles. Fighting is important to them so putting a lot of detail in their weapons makes sense. However I hate the new bat'leth. When they redesigned it for STID it looked great. It finally looked sharp and dangerous while still being instantly recognizable. This new one looks like a pointy walking stick owned by someone who loves bling.

There's already discussion on web media sites and Twitter about DSC being a shoe-in for costume Emmy. After seeing these incredibly rich costumes it's hard to argue.

I'm so glad the know-nothing fans who couldn't buy a clue about production design don't influence the creatives. Everything would look and sound like Trek continues instead of a 2017 scifi show.

Remember, not looking like previous trek from 20-50 years ago is not an argument.

RAMA

I agree with RAMA, this is without a doubt the best designed Klingon costume ever..! It kind of frustrates me that so many here are so negative towards the design decisions... Sometimes, I just hope the people working on DSC aren't looking into what is said on TrekBBS, Trekmovie and other forums, 'cause I fear it would de-motivatie them to pursue their vision.... come on guys, I'm not saying you shouldn't be critical and of course everyone has their own taste, but to call these costumes 'bad cosplay' or anything, that is not fair to the people working so hard to give us new Trek..

Your credibility is so low I'm just wondering if you're an Axanar plant/whiner.

Just how insecure are you about Discovery that you have to insult everyone who disagrees with your opinion?
Really man, anyone being dishonest and cliaming this stuff looks "cheap" or low quality and "fake"(what does that even mean for made up space aliens?) Are the ones being insecure and desprate here.

If you don't like it, cool. Not everyone will, its art. But don't lie about it being "cheap" or not good enough production value

RAMA isn't the one being insulting here, it is those that go really low by saying these costumes look cheap, ridiculous, 'worst design ever', etc. This goes beyond substantiated criticism, this is just downright degrading towards the people involved and those that do appriciate it.

Well some are trolls so why be gracious. I reserve that for people who exhibit thought process
