It was always going to be a divergence from a consistent part of the profile of the Doctor. The hints and build up has been clumsy but there was going to be reaction whenever they chose to do it. In the ideal world if it was revealed at the moment of regeneration and we get to see her animated as the Doctor then the grandstanding aspect of her being a different gender would've been less like a 'statement' move.
I wonder how the production might handle the situation if, mind you "IF", Whittaker were to become pregnant during her run? With Lucille Ball, they simply wrote it into the show. Doctor Who, being science fantasy, could get a bit more creative. I mean, if Chibnal and staff wanted to get strange, they could write it as the Doctor getting "infected" with a parasitical lifeform, one slowly growing over the course of the series. On the other hand, a real life pregnancy could be "ignored" with careful editing, cinematography, wardrobe and in some case, a bit of digital "jiggery pokery". Ironically, the arguably most daring choice would be to treat it as the condition it is, a "conventional" pregnancy (whatever might be considered "conventional" for Gallifreyans).

What kind of outfit do you think she should wear. I kind of like the idea of something that looks 80's. Also what about a hat? Other than a few Fez jokes we haven't seen a modern Doctor wear a hat.
Also I don't know if this goes against canon or anything but what if their were subtle differences when a time lord is man and when one is a woman. What if instead of 2 hearts she has 2 stomachs? Also do you think they will change the John Smith thing when the Doctor uses a fake name?

Given that Time Lords are by definition not all that concerned about the sequences of events, could they work it into the plot that said baby was to become Susan's mum or dad, that Hartnell's doctor had in fact been looking after a girl who was the granddaughter of a later incarnation?

The current series of "Wynonna Earp" should be seen as the gold standard for dealing with that situation. Melanie Scrofano is doing stunts and fight scenes at six months along that would be far more energetic than anything the Doctor ever does. So I'd hope they'd just embrace it, regardless of the storyline they go with.

I do agree the show should embrace it. If nothing else, it would do away the silliness of the looms from the books.

Just be glad Moffat isn't around to write it into the show. Many shows have figured out how to deal with that so I'm sure it's not a problem.
Mrs-Dimesdan has a very similar hair style, all she does is wash it and then blow dry it while brushing it in the morning.
She'll be packing hair gel and makeup. Mind you one never really thought about previous Doctor's grooming habits, at least she won't be shaving every morning.
