Nobility is a web series that is now on Amazon video. It stars Cas Anvar(Expanse) Doug Jones (DSC) Walter Koenig(TOS, B5) Torri Higginson (Stargate Atlantis) and other genre actors. Tobias Richter contributes to the SFX.
It's another entry into the increasingly crowded space series category.
Set 700 years in the future, it is about the C.A.S. Nobility, Humanity's most powerful starship with a crew, that's, well, anything but noble.
The series tries too hard. It's a cross between Star Trek and Farscape, with the crew all being malcontents. The show mentions the ship often..it's the flagship and it's awesome, but has a shitty crew. Now how on Earth did they manage that? It's too much to expect qualified, smart people to man a spaceship? Yeah, intelligence and accomplishment aren't respected that much these days. They have to be anti-heroes and argue every minute (which I hated about Farscape).
The show is about 60% humor. Unfortunately, it's so silly that we can't take any of the dangerous moments seriously either. It's borderline sexist, with the captain a sort of dirtier version of Capt Kirk. He plays video games half the time he is on the bridge. Koenig is a perpetually drunk chief engineer who barely says 3 words in a row and staggers through the ship. There's an Asian cowboy who talks in run-on sentences non-stop. I think that's supposed to be amusing. In fact all the characters act like teenagers. Sexual innuendo masquerades as "adult" convo.
The bad guys sort of suddenly appear in the Oort cloud, Nobility shows up and gets in a battle. All is forgotten as the Berlin(band) styled aliens apologize and then inexplicably turn on their hosts soon after. 2/3rds of the way through episode 3 I shut it off, not caring if they suddenly broke into a spontaneous version of "Metro".
Tobias Richter provides some good work, several others are credited with FX work.
Luckily all the episodes run under 18 minutes. 3/10 rating
