Otherwise, I think there's a real chance that they're going to attempt to keep the identity of the new Doctor secret until the Christmas special airs.

I really can't see them going that long without springing a leak, but even if they do, the surprise will only work for the British audience, which granted it's a British show but it does have a worldwide audience. The east coast of North America, the next ones who'll be watching the special after it airs in Britain are what, three or four hours behind Britain? By the time the special airs in Britain, it'll be about five or six pm eastern North America, and we'll have to wait until nine or ten our time to watch it, meaning we'll be able to find out the new Doctor online nearly five hours before we even watch the special.

They'll fail - filming on series 11 starts in the autumn, so the new Doctor will be out in public, getting photographed...

Yep, they will announce him/her before that happens, My bet is this August, but could even be this month.

Well, they had the Wrap Party for Capaldi and Moffat last night so post-production on the final episode adside it's Chibnall's show now.

They should bring her/him out at the SDCC for plenty of free publicity.

I suspect you posted that just to rile some of the more reactionary fans, but having watched Lucas throughout the season, there were some scenes that really stood out, like the time he stood up to and literally shouted down the Doctor , forcing him to confess his blindness. Matt can be "commanding" given the right material.

I'll admit I would not object to his accepting the TARDIS key, so to speak. Hmm, why not? Matt Lucas as the next Doctor... I can dig it.

No, I loved Nardole this season. It was nice having 2 companions again, even with Bill being a lot of fun too.

Matt has certainly claimed he's #13.

We really don't know either way. If he has already been cast, it's a bit unprecedented to have the new Doctor film his regeneration scene before being publicly announced, isn't it?

I don't know how they would be able to keep it a secret. I think that shit would leak like the Titanic.

That's just it, and besides no matter how secretive they tried to be, as soon as someone was spotted on the set of the Christmas special dressed in Capaldi's costume who obviously isn't his stunt double, it becomes pretty obvious who he is.

I have been watching him in Sherlock Holmes and his rapid fire manic delivery with emotional undercurrents would translate into the Doctor very well IMO.

Good luck trying to get him to commit to 9 months of filming in Cardiff. The guy have like 4 or five projects in the pipeline.

As someone mentioned just imagine the outrage at a doctor who season every 2 years. He'd probably be out by his second year with the regeneration at Christmas.

Other than being able to say he played the Doctor, why would Benedict do TV again? They wouldn't be able to afford him.

If they were to do something like the Peter Cushing movies, where they remake episodes as big-budget movies, then Cumberbatch would make sense and be plausible. For TV I don't see it happening.

13 says " What, What!" looks in a mirror and says, "No, No way, Timely Winey I guess... I'm back!!!"
He then trips over something and regenerates to Doctor #14, some one new.

Actually it's about time the Doctor did a Romana, with half a dozen faces before settling on one- that way you could bung the whole shortlist into the studio to be seen by fan=spies and still pull a surprise with which one it actually is. Or at least you could have apart from the matter of series 11 filming from late autumn, but, y'know...

How about a story where the Doctors regeneration goes wrong and his face (and personallity) changes back and forth between Capaldi's and the new doctor or something like that.
