For people curious about the Eaglemoss "Star Trek" graphic novel partworks, Issue #1 arrived in Sydney, Australia, this month. The first hardcover is "Countdown", the prequel tie-in to the 2009 movie, story by Orci & Kurtzman. The first Gold Key story, "The Planet of No Return", appears at the back. Both stories have new explanatory prefaces. $AU 4.95 introductory price. I found a bunch of TOS e-books marked down on Google Play, so I got That Which Divides, The Empty Chair, A Choice of Catastrophes and Unspoken Truth.
Not really. They differ on some of the details of Saavik's backstory (UT has Sarek and Amanda play a much larger role in raising Saavik), and really, they're both elaborating on the backstory Vonda McIntyre created for Saavik in her Wrath of Khan novelization.
No, only to the Saavik-backstory elements they have in common. TPP is mainly a movie-era story (between TMP and TWOK) about a Romulan bioweapon attack on Earth, but it features a couple of extended flashbacks to Saavik's origin story. UT is about the year in Saavik's life following The Voyage Home, and also has flashbacks to Saavik's formative years, which are mostly but not entirely compatible with TPP's flashbacks.

I'm currently rereading the Phoenix novels by Marshak and Culbreath because I just picked up an original Bantam copy of Triangle. In damn near mint condition! Folk, the beginning of Star Trek (indeed ALL) mainstream slash fiction. And I paid a single dollar. Garage sales rule!
