The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

I have no experience whatsoever with this Dazzler character, apart from the most cursory of understandings of who she is, but seeing as how so many '80s stars utterly vanished from the spotlight in the '90s, it seems to me to make total sense that a pop star from the former decade would end up an arts teacher or something at Xavier's School in the latter one.

There is honestly a lot more to her as a character then people who only know her early years probably realize. She's grown over the decades, and that's the character I'd like to see, not a joke character done because "LOL disco is lame".
I haven't been reading comics in the last 10 or 15 years or so, so I'm outta loop as far as that's concerned. I don't remember her being very prominent around the 1991 time frame they're using here.

I just want to say when I mention a 70s period piece it's not because I think it would be funny/lame but I can certainly see that it could easily end up that way if done poorly. I think in the right hands it could be pretty amazing but I'd love to see a lot of Marvel properties set in their heyday periods so I'm rather biased there.

EDIT: Looking online I guess the comics didn't debut til 1980 so the disco thing was probably always a dated fad for ol' Dazzler...

Did the announcement say she wasn't be introduced as a rock star? I could see going that way with her after she's been around for years, but it seems a weird way to introduce her since she's best know for being a rockstar.

I don't think we know anything about her. Like I've said, this is FOX. If the X-person in question even vaguely resembles their comic counterpart you're lucky, if they have any of the same character traits you're extremely lucky, and if they actually have a point in the storyand aren't just a wasted cameo then you've won the lottery. I'm pretty sure Dazzler, at best, will be like Angel in X3 or Psylocke in Apocalypse. Similar look to the comic character (or at least the post-Disco Dazzler look), but basically none of the personality and could easily be removed from the movie without any impact to the story.

I was going to try to defend them, but thinking about it, I realize that you're probably right.:(

^ That's utter crap, and you know it. Just because the XMCU chose to adapt the storyline in a way that was significantly different from the comics doesn't mean that it wasn't adapted.

I'm with @Nerys Myk and @Emh . Dark Phoenix was teased and perhaps a few elements used, but in the end, X3 was another story about Magneto. Jean/Phoenix was a squandered subplot. The Last Stand was as much an adaptation of Dark Phoenix as Iron Man 3 was an adaptation of Extremis, or Thor: Ragnarok will be of Planet Hulk.

If something draws on an external source for elements of its story in any way, it qualifies as an adaptation, even if it is ultimately vastly different from the thing(s) from which it is adapted.

"Done properly" like not make the main character a mindless macguffin with no relevance except being an Autowin button until the last five minutes after spending the whole movie giving us no character and barely any lines from her. Famke Jannsen was absolutely robbed and when if Scott had to die for uh... reasons... that was trash.

I swear to God if they make this the Magneto and Charles and Mystique show again...

It will be. Who will studio bosses think your general Friday/Saturday night movie goer is gonna wanna see and will draw them in? Who's gonna need to be front and centre on the posters? Who's gonna need their names embalzoned in big letters on said poster to really get those punters in??-

Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender?

or

Sophie Turner (that girl from GoT) and Tye Sheridan (who?)
