Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

I'm not sure I believe that report, but the fact that nobody said a thing about Pascal's comments for several days immediately led me to be suspicious of the 'walk-back ' comments we did eventually get, particularly since Sony drawing connections between its independent Spidey movies and Homecoming and its sequels would in no way obligate Marvel Studios to follow suit, and I still feel like it's entirely possible for Sony to create such links without it having any effect whatsoever on their partnership with Marvel Studios

Speaking of said partnership, there are a few sites out there who are reporting today on the fact that Sony keeps 100% of the profits from Homecoming as if it's "Breaking News" and not something that has been public knowledge for 3 years, which makes me want to roll my eyes and post snarky Perry White Batman v Superman memes.
 
I wonder what Marvel gets from working with Sony if they don't get any profits from the movie? Maybe its just having Spidey in the MCU along with merchandise sales (which, if its like the X-Men deal, Marvel has all the toys/misc merchandise rights, not Sony). Regardless of why they're doing it I'm happy its an MCU thing, even if every trailer has made me less and less excited to the point where I'll be watching Homecoming for the same reason I watched Fant4stic (a combination of morbid curiosity and being a huge superhero fan), and having rock bottom expectations.

Still, hopefully Spidey will have a decent role in Infinity War, even if its just a small scene or being part of a big group.

Merchandise profits and access to Spider-Man is exactly what Marvel Studios gets out of the deal.

The lack of profit-sharing goes both ways, BTW; Sony doesn't see any of the profits from Civil War, Infinity War, or any other Marvel Studios-produced movies that feature Spidey or any of his supporting cast, but that's offset, of course, by the fact that they (Sony) retain full ownership of and control over the Spider-Man property in general when it comes to film rights.

Silver Sable? No one is asking to see that, or any of the other far-from-known characters. At least with DC's Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn was a character with multiple appearances in other DC adaptations in the past 20 years, so the audience (or DC fans) had someone to focus on. Beyond that, if any Sony Spider-Man related projects are anything like the Garfield films, they are in serious trouble, since that series was a misguided pile of crap with Garfield acting like someone with hospital-worthy psychological issues, and Stone walking around only as a prop/reminder that she's playing a doomed character.

Yeah, that makes sense and seems like a good deal. marvel was going to get Spidey's merchandise rights anyway, but making sure he's in good movies will obviously help sales, and of course getting to use him in their films is also a big thing. If only FOX/Constantin Films and Disney could play nicely like this. Imagine a similar deal but with the Fantastic Four. :sigh:

He had a substantial, albeit not a significant role in the original mini-series, for what it's worth, which probably isn't much. :lol:

Merchandising. Marvel/Disney has exclusive rights to all merchandising profits. Spider-Man merchandising is a juggernaut that far surpasses Batman, Avengers and JLA combined. Just the mere announcement that Spider-Man was joining the MCU created a huge spike in merchandising sales. Can you imagine what a well-received blockbuster movie will do?

Legend has it that back in the day, before the first Iron Man started shooting, Ike Perlmutter told Jon Favreau that he would be happy if the movie broke even because all he really wanted to do was sell more toys.
 
When it comes to the whole MCU/not MCU confusion, the impression I've gotten is that they will be using the characters, events, ect from the Spider-Man movies, but will completely ignore the rest of the MCU. The weird thing with this is that they seem to be using a lot of MCU content in Homecoming, so I have to how they would handle that in future movies. I'm assuming they could talk generally about Spider-Man fighting Vulture, but couldn't get into any of the backstory of where their suits and technology came from.

to be fair, Perlmutter was in the toy buisness before he had anything to do with Marvel, so selling toys was something he was always pretty focused on.

Still, I get what you mean. Merchandise is a big deal, its how George Lucas really got rich.

I'm thinking it will be more like Agents of SHIELD. Someone might mention Iron Man or the attack on New York from Avengers 1 in, say, Venom, but Venom will never be mentioned in an MCU film.

They would be more likely to mention "that billionaire in the flying suit" and "The Incident".

Regardless, I don't think the other Spidey related movies will ignore the MCU stuff, since Spidey himself will still be pretty firmly connected to it. At the very least, it will be alluded to and nothing important will be directly contradicted.

I think it'll be the other way around. Sony's movies might reference events in the MCU because Sony clearly very badly wants to play up this new relationship with Marvel Studios, but the core MCU properties will likely completely ignore Sony's movies, much like how they ignore ABC's and Netflix's productions.
