News Jonathan Frakes will direct an episode of Discovery

... And of course... To some on social media, this is proof the show is "in trouble". I laughed.

RAMA

Oh, yes, I've already seen this spun as a "desperate" attempt to "save" the show.

As well as the ridiculous notion that Frakes directing an episode of THE ORVILLE somehow means that he's really on their side . . . as though this is matter of choosing sides.

I think that's nice and all, but it's hardly like they are getting Gene Coon back from the dead to write scripts.

First Contact for me, is overrated. I thought BOBW was the best Borg story that could be told, and I don't feel FC even came close to topping it. Insurrection was terrible. I don't know how much of that is due to Frakes, but for me, this is a PR move. He's obviously qualified to direct, but I don't see him as a super savior.

Of course, I don't even know if this show needs saving. For all I know, it's really good. Or really bad.

Thing is, nothing I have read has made me want to pay to see it. Not yet.

That said, I would love something that WOULD make me do that.

Insurrection was a poor script IMO
FC wasn't that good, couldn't live up to hype

I don't mind Frakes being involved, BUT do NOT want the stale 90's Rick Berman ethos ubiquitous in Discovery

Want fresh Trek not more of TNG ever present talking n by the book Trek by numbers. Again IMO

TNG DS9 and VOY are my favorites. I didn't get into TOS until later.

Frakes wouldn't be changing or making Discovery look like anything other than what it looks like by the time he gets there. The producers aren't going to let anyone come in and change their "style". Frakes will direct within the guidelines given him, as do all directors on all TV shows.

How dare you bring logic into this discussion. Don't you know this is a Star Trek message board?!

Very excited about this news. I was hoping some of the old-cast-turned-directors would get a shot. We probably shouldn't expect anyone else this season, but at some point I'd love for Roxann Dawson to get a shot. Levar Burton and Robbie McNeill would be more than welcome also.

I know the style will stay the same. Honestly I like the style. I hope the writing and stories fit and respect cannon, and that the only thing changing are the visuals. I believe frakes wouldn't work on a Trek show unless the writing fit Trek. I believe he respects Trek too much to work on something that doesn't respect it.

Johnathan Frakes has directed some outstanding episodes of some of my favorite shows, so even if he didn't have a past Trek connection, I'd still be excited. I would love to see Robert Duncan McNeil and Roxanne Dawson direct too. Is LeVar Burton still directing?

It got to the point where I had to quit watching trekyards because they were so negative about discovery, saying it's not prime and all the other bs. Wonder if any of the anti-discovery "fans" will shut up now.
I thought Trekyards were pretty objective in their analysis. Granted I didn't watch all their videos, so I might be wrong. And I have to agree it does not look or feel like prime universe for now, but that does not necessarily imply negative.
EDIT: on topic, it is good to have Frakes back. I was happy when I read the news.
