Wonder Woman (2017)

Glad to hear it! We were a part of that first wave!

I would like to nominate Patty Jenkins to direct Justice League 2!

I'm planning on seeing it again in the theaters. I haven't been interested in a rewatch of any film since Star Wars:TFA.

Wonder Woman finished lower than the other recent DC films on its opening weekend it seems. But it has great word of mouth so that may give it some legs for the month of June. I'm really interested in seeing what next weekend holds in store.

Yeah... The other three films had strong opening weekends but plummeted afterward due to bad word-of-mouth. I suspect that WW's rave reviews will lead to bigger success in the long term.

Something interesting I just read is that the movie's box office increased over the course of the weekend rather than fell off, which seems to bode well.

A movie called "Batman vs. Superman" has a gigantic built-in audience so I'm not surprised it opened better than Wonder Woman did. I hope Wonder Woman has legs at the box office, though!

This is an... interesting opinion...

Why Wonder Woman is a masterpiece of subversive feminism

Women are repeatedly erased from the history of classical music, art and medicine. It takes a radical mind to pick up that being erased from the history of evil is not great either. Wonder Woman’s casual rebuttal of a sexual advance, her dress-up montage (“it’s itchy”, “I can’t fight in this”, “it’s choking me”) are also feminist acts. Wonder Woman is a bit like a BuzzFeed list: 23 Stupid Sexist Tropes in Cinema and How to Rectify Them. I mean that as a compliment.

Aside from which, referring to Zeus and Hyppolyta being together as an "unholy congress" is pretty stunningly inapt.

Good article.

I'm seeing a lot of posts from friends, who normally avoid superhero movies, now planning on seeing this. A lot of Dad's taking their kids and a lot of women planning date nights with their husbands or women's nights with friends.

Obviously not a scientific survey but word seems to be spreading that this is the movie to see.

I thought Themyscira looked a lot like the Amalfi coast and was delighted just now to learn that this was where those scenes were shot.

Weekend estimates are out and it looks like

$100.5 million opening weekend domestic launch
$122.5 million overseas

$223 million total :techman:

The final numbers came out and they were revised up from the original estimates

$103.2 million opening weekend domestic launch
$125.0 million overseas

$228.2 million total

True, but both BvS and SS were team-up movies and those tend to do better than solos.
It beat all the MCU solo movies except Iron Man 2 and 3, and Civil War(if one can even count that as a "solo" movie).

(I don't usually care how much money a movie makes(as long as it's enough to get a sequel :D) but I'm hoping Wonder Woman makes it by the truckloads just to rub it in Marvel's face for waiting 21 movies to put a woman in the lead )

but I'm hoping Wonder Woman makes it by the truckloads
So am I. But for different reasons.

...Also, let's not let DC too far off the hook. Why did it take them so long to make Wonder Woman? Marvel have been making movies for less than ten years. It's been almost 40 years since Superman The Movie.

Supergirl
I asked why it took so long to make Wonder Woman, not a female-led film. I doubt anyone would hold up Supergirl or Catwoman as quality films. (Although I do have a soft spot for Supergirl.)

Would WB/DC have ever bothered to make a Wonder Woman film if Marvel hadn't paved the way for this kind of franchise building? Yeah, maybe...

At the end of the day, Marvel and DC both doing well means we all win. :)

Supergirl

Was a bad movie. And isn't Wonder Woman. And was released in a time when superhero movies were 'for kids'. And even back then, Wonder Woman could've had a much better chance than other characters if they had treated her with the same respect they treated Superman and Batman.

And it's still been 12 years since DC started taking superheros 'seriously' with Batman Begins, yet they chose to take chances on Jonah Hex and Constantine while pushing the third member of the DC trinity back again and again.
