Spoilers Arrow - Season 5

I enjoyed it as well. Had a great epic feel. But the cliffhanger falls short because we know they didn't just kill off 95% of the cast and characters.

The only problem with a cliffhanger like that is unless everyone is going to die and of course leave the show, it loses a little punch because we know they will be back.

We can't even confirm Malcolm died. He's a pretty tricky guy.

Maybe they kill one character like William's mom, which would complicate things a bit for Oliver.

The only major character that might be in jeopardy is Thea, because she doesn't appear in all the episodes anymore, but hopefully not.

I was surprised by the cliffhanger ending as it seems counter productive towards the whole 5 season arc ending but seeing the place where it all began blow up, is fitting imagery nonetheless. The episode itself was the best season finale of the DC shows (they all had pretty good ones tbf) and edged Flash the previous night for me. The season itself was easily superior to it's 3 spinoff shows and the best Arrow has produced since the first two seasons (it may edge s1 but s2 is still the benchmark for me). It will be interesting to see where the show will go from here and how much longer CW/WB will want to keep making the show for?

I think Malcolm is 100% dead and saving his daughter's life was the only redemption that character could achieve so I am fine with it. Captain Boomerang has gone with him (Evelyn too & Talia) and I wonder like Deadshot, did WB execs want that because of their Suicide Squad plans. As for the team, well of course most will survive & potentially all of them BUT I would prefer to see some deaths come from this cliffhanger...

* William's mum (Dead) - Olly raising his son would change the dynamic of the show and lay the groundwork for a future replacement? one we won't see of course but the TV shows' version of Connor Hawke.

* Slade (Dead) - As much as I loved Slade as a villian and seeing him part of the team this week, I am fine with him dying. His story probably reached full circle as I can't see him becoming a villian again and no chance he will be a hero especially with the character going against Batman in "The Batman" movie.

As for everyone else, it hard to say goodbye to any of them but I think the most likely candidates are Lance, Nyssa or Wild Dog.

That was a really good finale, a fitting end to the whole five seasons and ten years of Oliver's journey.

I love that Slade is cured, has regained his sanity and is on a path to redemption, I hope he pops up now and then as an ally or a mercenary/anti-hero figure, but not as a villain.

The ending was kinda predictable once the dead man's switch was revealed, I may have even shouted at the screen "knock him out, he'll off himself" several times but to no avail.

Obviously the main cast is alright, or at least most of them should be, it's probably gonna be more difficult to explain how Evelyn, Black Siren, Talia and even Malcolm and Captain Boomerang(never trust an off screen explosion!) survived, or the ARGUS guy that wouldn't leave his post in Slade's prison cell(is that where everyone hid possibly? it is an underground bunker after all...)

Flash and Arrow switched signature lines this week, first Killer Frost had to become "someone else", now Moira(yay!) called Oliver "beautiful boy".

Speaking of Flash, I find it interesting how the Flash and Arrow finales mirrored each other. On Flash, Team Flash is still there, but has lost their leader, while Team Arrow leader is still there, but has lost his team. Maybe they should team up and from one supershow. ;)

And nobody tried to destroy Star City in May, Mayor Queen's rating is bound to jump even higher because no Mayor was able to achieve that in four years. :techman:

did WB execs want that because of their Suicide Squad plans

It seems they've relaxed those restrictions considerably in the past few years.

I liked the episode, especially the Oliver/Slade scenes and the great scene with Moira. But once again, the writing is as dumb as hell. Chase, who has been doing this for what, only 4 years, was able to plant hundreds of C4 bombs on the island that was under the control of Argus. Really? If there's one characteristic the show is consistent with when it comes to Oliver, it's his stupidity. He saves William and just lets Chase sit there, giving him the chance to kill himself. Chase committing suicide was the most obvious play there. The writing on this show never stands up and as I've said consistently with this show, the writers write their characters to fit their scripts. They don't write their scripts to fit their characters.

So to survive an island full of explosives you just swim about twenty yards out and watch the show. No big deal. They could have even pushed the plane out into the sea and let if drift away from the island which would have given them cover from the flying rocks and trees that exploded.
Slade really needs to be a semi-permanent member of the team going forward. Great dynamic between him and Ollie that the show has not had since season 1.

This seems to be my week for missing the starts of things. Last Friday, I missed recording the first 3 episodes of Syfy's 12 Monkeys season 3 binge (all 10 episodes premiered over 3 consecutive nights) and had to wait until they showed up On Demand on Monday to start watching. And last night, a tornado warning announcement -- not even for my county -- pre-empted the first 5 minutes of the Arrow finale. I watched it online this morning. Well, at least we live in a time when you can miss part of a show and not have to wait long to see the whole thing.

I was surprised by the cliffhanger ending as it seems counter productive towards the whole 5 season arc ending but seeing the place where it all began blow up, is fitting imagery nonetheless.

I think it works as a symbol of the flashbacks coming to an end. Lian Yu -- or rather, the "five years in hell" bracketed by it -- has been a burden on Oliver for the five years since, but now he and the show are moving beyond it, no longer looking constantly backward. So blowing up the whole island was very meta. (Also, the presumably digital effects of the explosions were surprisingly convincing.)

Captain Boomerang has gone with him (Evelyn too & Talia) and I wonder like Deadshot, did WB execs want that because of their Suicide Squad plans.

I kinda wonder why they even bothered to bring him back. He was suddenly there and then he was gone.

And I'm disappointed that Anatoly didn't show up to help Oliver (in the present day, that is). I was hoping for that.

I don't want any of them to go. As for Deathstroke, there's precedent for him undergoing redemption and becoming an antihero; and if we can have the Flash on TV and movies at the same time, why not Slade? And I don't want to see William's mother fridged just to motivate Oliver's arc. That's a worn-out trope.

Besides, we've already had a "Connor Hawke." That was the alias used by John Diggle, Jr. in the alternate future of "Star City 2046" on Legends of Tomorrow last season.

or the ARGUS guy that wouldn't leave his post in Slade's prison cell(is that where everyone hid possibly? it is an underground bunker after all...)

Ooooh, excellent thought. I bet that's it. But I doubt Malcolm will turn out alive. Black Siren, maybe.
Didn't I read that Katie Cassidy is going to be back as a regular next year?

I'd also be disappointed if Evelyn were dead. I would've liked to see her undergo a redemptive arc. Given her tragic beginnings and the way she was manipulated by Chase, it'd be a shame if she ended up being just a one-note henchwoman who was incidentally killed off.

And it'd be a waste if they killed off Talia so soon after finally introducing her.

Wasn't that archive footage from the pilot? Oliver's beard looked different than in the new footage.

I enjoyed the season finale. Nice cliffhanger too. :bolian:
Would you say.. it's the bomb????

I think Malcolm definitely survived... he pulled Harkness on the bomb then jumped away. Harkness moved, then blew up

My one gripe... the long hair and beard were fake IN STORY too??? They could have had him grow it out over this season? Really? I was hoping he'd still be on the island for 6 more months...so it would look more realisitic

But since THAT beard was fake, and he was apply to apply the make up really quick... why can't his beard be part of his mask??? That would have been best from the get go.

I wonder if there will be a flash forward a couple of years, to have COnnor be a teenager that can be an Arrow-in-Training ... and maybe some flashbacks to the rescue from the island (after the bomb)

Surley the only way they could of survived was reaching Slade's bunker but that's near the coastline if memory serves and they seemed quite far inland at the time. ARGUS security didn't notice anyone planting hundreds (at least) of pounds of C4 or other explosives across the island they use as a prison? Bad ARGUS, BAD!

I kinda wonder why they even bothered to bring him back. He was suddenly there and then he was gone.

At first I thought they may be bringing him back so he can go to Flash next season, maybe be part of the Rogues as villains, and I thought that would be really cool... but then he spoke and I remembered how bland he was, so now I kinda hope they don't do that.

Didn't I read that Katie Cassidy is going to be back as a regular next year?

Yep, they said that.

Wasn't that archive footage from the pilot? Oliver's beard looked different than in the new footage.

That scene definitely wasn't in the pilot, I suppose it might have been cut and never aired, but I think it's new. It's really difficult to tell because Susanna Thompson does not age. :)

...aaaand I just realized that was Jack Harkness and Digger Harkness talking there :D

Both Wild Dog and New Black Canary were promoted to regulars next season as well as Black Siren. And no words of anyone leaving. So I guess those are the survivors.

Wonder if they will continue the story line of Rene trying to get his daughter back?

I dunno, I find Nick Tarabay's Captain Boomerang more interesting than the one in the Suicide Squad movie. And it'd be nice if The Flash finally put together a proper team of Rogues, though it'd be hard to do without Captain Cold and Heat Wave. And they'd probably have to do it piecemeal anyway due to limitations on guest-star budgets, like how LoT only gradually assembled the Legion of Doom.

Maybe ARGUS planted the bombs first? As a way to stop prisoners form escaping? Then Chase took it over with his plan....but how much money did he have to be able to do all that?

So Two Canaries? Maybe we will have Cyborg as a guest star, on a mission to shoot both. "So you're gonna kill 2 birds with one Stone"?

Wonder if they will continue the story line of Rene trying to get his daughter back?

I can't wait to see the argument before the judge... "So you were kidnapped by Prometheus, who is conveniently dead in the seas near China. Oh, OK...."
