Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

My friend @Mark 2000 shares his thoughts on the Discovery uniforms in this article.

And I agree. Discovery's aesthetic doesn't seem vibrant and exciting. It seems rather drab and looks like every other sci-fi TV show produced in the last few years.

Well... I liked the last line.

It's also struck me how things have changed in the past ten years. I had to leave this board for a while because people were acting like JJ Abrams just shat in their cereal, and over the past week all I've heard is "He did it right with all the coluors!"

Exactly. I heard similar arguments against Abrams Trek. The only thing missing is the death threats.

I am not certain about the uniforms. I get a 80s tracksuit vibe. I think the metal mesh sides are too much. I will hold off my final opinion until I have seen a few episodes but I always enjoyed the color coordinated roles - and I am missing that from the trailer.

Not a fan of the uniforms, too monochromatic, with extra doodads that don't look functional at all, but in any case I don't get too hung up over sartorial choices.

I strongly dislike his two movies, but I feel that the uniforms were a point in their favor. Nothing wrong with giving credit where it's due. The uniforms in Beyond were much better though.

The more I see of these uniforms the less I like them.

It is not, as they say, a "deal breaker" or indicative in any way of a problem with the series or the people making it.

I wish there was a little more asymmetry with the uniforms. While I do like single dominant colors, I agree the new uniforms are a bit generic scifi at this point. My favorite uniforms were the red ones from the TOS movies, and I loved that there were different uniforms for the enlisted crew and the officers. Now, I wouldn't want something like that in a modern version, the red uniforms only worked for the era in which they were made. A modern version of those uniforms would look pretty silly, I'm thinking.

I actually don't know what I want from new uniforms now that I think about it. I like asymmetry like with the red ones and TNG, but I also like the first contact uniforms because of their dominant black coloring with the splashes of color.

Hm. Maybe I'd be happy with the new uniforms design if the only difference was that the color was changed by department, but a more subdued color as opposed to bright. That could have looked good.

Count me as a fan that doesn't know what he wants, haha.

^ But the collar and zipper on the front actually are asymmetric. How much asymmetry do you want? :p

Costuming is the thing most likely to evolve in a Trek series - if it's not working for one reason or another, they'll change it, though probably not all at once.

All the glitter fabric is very Flash Gordon. Looks cheap and cheesy.

I rewatched the trailer - pretty damn good trailer overall, but silly as it is, I agree that the costumes don't seem quite right.

Having gotten used to TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, Kelvin movies using the red/yellow/blue schemes, the monochromatic blue feels like a bizarre throwback to ENT, whose outfits weren't exactly iconic.

Even the 80s movies with the burgundy outfits have a military feel that's also Trek. These blue outfits have the logo insignia but that's all. Not getting the vibe and I can't quite place it despite noticing they're not that iconic.

But the uniforms -- I hope they'll grow on me.

The metallic mesh is bad enough, but the mesh pattern itself is made up of tiny Star Trek delta symbols, which makes it look even sillier.

I think the uniform works fine as either an interim uniform between ENT and TOS--or between ENT and Kelvin Timeline-TOS. In either timeline, it bridges the 22nd-Century and the 23rd-Century, which probably was the main idea behind it, IMO.

That being said...I do personally wish that "The Cage"/"Where No Man Has Gone Before" uniforms do make an appearance somewhere, even if they're worn by another crew in just one episode. The only reason why I do is because I always liked those early uniforms more than I did the actual TOS uniforms. But even if they don't ever appear in DIS, it's not something I'll lose any sleep over (or write posts about later).

I'd wear it.

I'd wear it to Studio 54.

Interestingly, the high-res photo of Georgiou shows that the bright vertical line running crookedly up the front of the tunics is not the exposed teeth of a zipper but gold piping on each side of the opening. Presumably there's a zipper behind it. Odd choice.

It just seems interesting that they would create a visual progression between ENT to TOS with these uniforms when we're generally intended to believe that the Kelvin itself, whose uniforms are arguably more TOS and post-TOS looking, originate from the Prime timeline and be placed between ENT and DSC. The stylings would then be jumping back and forth from the ENT jumpsuit to streamlined TOS style uniforms to, again, ENT looking uniforms with DSC, and then back to TOS?

Not only that, but TOS is only 10 years away and ENT was a hundred years back but these uniforms feel like they're right in the middle. But then again, things like uniform design and ship design isn't necessarily a progressive evolution visually like biological lifeforms and can change completely from one design to another (despite how some people may feel :p)
