But, at this state of production, there are concerns that people have. That's why I find it such an opportunity for discussion. Yes, it is inherently negative, but there is nothing wrong with that. The idea, for me, is to look at the negativity, and understand where people are coming from. Yes, you can learn more about people through this type of discussion, including what they value in a production, what they enjoy for entertainment, as well as personal beliefs and opinions. It's also an opportunity for exchange of ideas, or "discussion."I'm not sure that you are getting my meaning or that I'm properly explaining myself.
A discussion like the "Likes and Dislikes of Trek" because people will highlight things that they found annoying or ruining suspension of disbelief in the process isn't the same because it is done "afterwards" or "during" a project when sufficient material upon which to make an opinion. Plus, "disliking" elements isn't automatically "just being negative" if those opinions are formed fair mindedly and because a person is just negative "for the sake of it".
Actually creating problems to moan about is just a negative attitude. I don't understand how you find a purpose in it (to get to know people better) because all people are doing is making up problems that exist in the first place. What else can you learn from that except "this dude is downer?".
EDIT: That last bit isn't claiming you are wrong, I'm just saying I don't see it and asking what it is.
Right now, there isn't an "after" to this project for people to discuss, but guess what? There are still plenty of Star Trek materials for individuals to point to and say "If it's like this, I won't watch it."

Maybe internet fandom is like the MU version of pre-internet fandom. I've had internet since the 90's, but never got into any fandom stuff until probably around 2010; where I quickly learned I was wrong "about..a great..many..things" that I liked, but was actually supposed to hate. On some of those, I followed suite for a time...until I watched and/or read them again.
If it's dull, or if they pull what Supergirl has been pulling this season and blatantly go on the nose with the US political (Or Brexit) situation.
Yes, if it lacks any humor, and witty banter. And if it handles social issues in a divisive, and obvious sort of way.
So....Star Trek?
I'll hold my tongue. But only because it's not worth it and I don't want to put the moderators through the mess it would lead to.
I hope Discovery is everything Donald Trump hates.

I'm not sure its worth while to produce a show someone will definitely hate. I certainly don't see the value.

On the other hand, it's pretty much impossible to produce something that nobody will be offended by. And trying too hard to do so is just going to lead to self-censorship, which can be a problem in its own right.
It's funny. I've written stuff that I was sure was going to be controversial. Not a peep.
Then I'll get hate mail over something I thought was totally innocuous.
After awhile, you just decide that life is too short to worry about it. People are going to get offended over the darnedest things and that's just the way it is.
(I still remember the guy who sent Tor thirty-seven angry letters--by snail mail--because a fantasy series set in an imaginary realm had people worshiping gods other than Jesus!)

I've never understood why people do that. If I don't like a form of entertainment I simply turn it off.
