Thoughts on Burnham's relationship to Sarek

Plus, there is the even more obvious reason - Burnham is a black woman and Amanda Grayson is a white woman. This show is intended as a prequel to TOS so there has to be consistency. If it isn't a direct prequel in the same universe, then they can change whatever they like.

No one suggested that she was Amanda's daughter.

Although she easily could be Amanda's biological daughter, and Sarek's step kid.

I have been on the receiving end of inequality and favouritism because I'm a black man, and neither one is pleasant. I do not care that the world has been, or mostly is, favoured towards white men, I have no desire to see a "diversity" that leads to more inequality. I, like many people, want to be treated fairy and to get what I earn. True diversity is everyone getting the same opportunities to advance, not because there is a quota or agenda.

We're back to the accusations of 'agenda' bullshit.

Joy.

Yes, it has been suggested that Burnham is Amanda Grayson's daughter. Several times by several people.

There is no agenda or accusations of such on my part. I'm simply saying that diversity should mean equality for all, not favour one person or "group".

There is no need for profanity. I fail to see how expressing a wish for equality for everyone could warrant aggression.

As you've been told by the mod, cursing is permitted here. If you don't like it, suck it up and ignore it, but stop telling people they can't use it themselves.

Well, you've made your opinion on swearing known multiple times now, so move on and stop bringing it up.

We have reached the stage where I'd have had a hard time missing it.

I wouldn't presume that you or anyone would be familiar with it. I don't see how that is bad thing.

I also don't see why it is big deal that someone wouldn't like profanity or that they'd think it was ridiculous in place like a message board.

Move. On.

Stop derailing the thread. It is becoming disruptive to the conversation.

Everybody please stick to discussing the content of the thread, not the style of other people's posts.

Any rebelliousness exhibited by Spock or Sybok is hardly reflective on Sarek's ability as a parent.

No. But not talking to your son for 18 years over a career choice definitely is. And, as we learned on TNG, Spock and Sarek were still at odd a hundred years later.

Abused kids have a tough time ever seeing eye-to-eye with the abusive parent. Trust me, I know from personal experience.

What's interesting is that in light of the new trailer, Fuller's comment from some months ago about wanting to incorporate Amanda Grayson makes somewhat more sense now. I wonder what role she played in Michael's past and if they will still try to have her appear.
Maybe she's a niece of Amanda Greyson?

People are even getting carried away with the notion that shocking family revelations are the DNA of Star Wars. I happened one time - the brother/sister thing wasn't even that big a surprise and the Prequels, animated series and TFA have no "shock family reveals". Kylo Ren being Han & Leia's son is not an "I am your father" moment.
Family revelations certainly happened one time, but the everyone-is-related thing does get tiresome. Luke and Leia are twin siblings despite their entirely coincidental meeting, Kylo is Han and Leia's son. Realistically we all know Rey is going to be related to someone important somehow, who entirely coincidentally ran into BB8. It's small universe syndrome, and Star Wars is bad at it. Trek's not usually too bad at it, but it's got worse. It was one of the reasons I was a little disappointed we were getting Sarek again, and why I hope Burnham isn't a relative of Spock. It just all smacks of all-too-convenient fanwank.

Maybe Sarek and Amanda were both once teachers - he's the Vulcan language teacher/tutor at Amanda's employer school which Burnham attended. Heck, maybe she was the governess for little Michael with him coming in to tutor her in a language she wasn't familiar with - and that's how they met.

Interesting thought. Though it would make the scenes seem like it was more about Sarek and Amanda, than about Burnham.

I don't think the very first episode should be doing big reveals about characters who aren't part of the central cast.

I'm going with fully human raised by Vulcans (because Sarek and Amanda are kindof a natural fit for that). I'm hugely curious as to how it happened though. Genius kid accepted and being boarded at the Academy as a test case? Related to Amanda by blood or marriage? Discovered floating in a life-pod in Vulcan space, her home planet blown to smither... oh wait, wrong universe there. ;D
