News Companion Aftershow Talking Trek Announced

I prefer the producer's commentary tracks that Ron Moore did for "Battlestar Galactica" and "Outlander." It's like watching the show with the producer (and occasionally other crew members from the show) sitting there explaining how each scene came together. (I also like "Talking Dead," but much of that show is time-filler and sponsored fluff.)

Either as a commentary track or on the after-show, I'd like to hear from the producers and writers who actually work on the scripts, about their views on continuity and the Trek universe beyond "Discovery." (Actors are also interesting, but all they can do is state what we already saw them doing in the episode.)

Deadline reports that Discovery will have a companion aftershow called Talking Trek. No word on who is hosting or even where it will be airing, but presumably it'll also be on CBS All Access.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this news mentioned earlier despite it being announced during yesterday's presentation.

I am aware that several shows have these but I've never seen them except for a brief appearancee on the Marc Maron TV series.

What is the purpose of them? Do they interview cast and crew and go behind the scenes like Rebels Recon on starwars.com?

Yeah I agree, producers writers and directors are generally the most interesting people to listen to, I liked the SG1 DVD commentaries for this reason, and the Trek movie commentaries with Leonard Nimoy and Nicholas Meyer.
That's also something to be said for a time gap for the speakers to get some perspective and not feel pressurised to 'sell' the work - it ups the level of honest appraisal they are capable of.
I'm concerned "Talking Trek" will just be a long advert for the show, but I doubt we'll see it outside the US anyway.

I'll give it a shot, but as someone who watched After the Black (Orphan Black's after show), I was really disappointed in what I saw. They didn't bring anything to the table, at least from a behind the scenes perspective. It felt like the hosts were geeking out over the most inconsequential thing. If they go for an hour and really dig deep into the episode, than it might work.

Good news for Canadians. TALKING TREK will be shown on SPACE. Found this article that confirms it.

Bell Media also confirmed today the pick-up of post STAR TREK: DISCOVERY companion after-show, TALKING TREK for Space.

With the SPACE channel being based in Toronto (where Discovery is being filmed) this makes perfect sense.

EDIT: Confirmation link straight from Bell Media's website. : http://www.bellmedia.ca/sales/tv/space/talking-trek/

Unless Talking Trek is also filmed in Toronto, there's no real advantage to it simply being shown in Canada. If it *is* filmed there, it would be easy for them to bring in production crew such as makeup and wardrobe people, for the hosts to actually talk to, without incurring too much expense. By contrast, Talking Dead is filmed in LA (and Walking Dead is in Georgia), clear across the country, and while they DO have guests on there are a lot of filmed segments on set and during production. I suspect this is the way they'll go for Talking Trek as filming will have wrapped (or gotten pretty close to wrapping) by then.

After the Black was hosted by the hosts of Innerspace, a sci-fi news program on the Space channel which also reviews new episodes of Space shows after they air. Indeed, After the Black originated because too much Innerspace content was being devoted to Orphan Black.

But anyway, yeah, what you described basically summarizes a typical episode of Innerspace, especially the geeking out over inconsequential things bit. Their review of the Doctor Who episode Listen had them spending a whole minute over how great it was to see "the return of the War Doctor" despite the fact that what we saw in the episode was just stock footage of the War Doctor used for a sort of flashback sequence.

SWEET! There was sooooooooooo much coming outta Vegas last weekend I lost track of all the details man!
I'll take a look, but I don't remember if it was a push to get him to be the host or if he was named formally. Like you, everything is a blur still from all the information flying out of Vegas!

A whole show dedicated to telling me what I should think of the show I just watched? No thanks.

Are you kidding? If they show behind-the-scenes stuff, it would be a rare almost immediate glimpse into that material for Trek. That's what I'd like to see.

That's what I'm thinking will comprise most of the after-shows. The ability to have cast members on, talk about certain scenes and have behind the scenes stories. To have that, right after the episode and not wait for a book or something later will be great!

If there is a DVD/Blu Ray release, I wonder if the after-shows will be special features on the discs?
