That's basically how I see it.

Who knows, though? Maybe there is an Enterprise flying around that looks like it did in "The Cage", but that's way too jarring. I'd prefer to think the Enterprise in Discovery would look more like it fits in with the new show, if we ever see it.

So, a plethora of folk here are going to mention the name Robert April, the captain of the Enterprise at the time

Looking at those pictures ,I noticed the thick arms and seat of the Shenzhou command chair are very TOS

I think the bridge in "The Cage" should be changed to fit the aesthetic of Discovery, if we ever see it. What we see in Discovery is what Star Trek looks like now.

I know that's a funny thing to hear from someone who used to moderate the TOS Forum for a few years, but it's what I think.

They don't look like contemporaries to me. Before, I could say, well TOS looked this way and ENT looks that way or TNG looks this way because they didn't take place in the same time. But now, in this case, not so much. When they take place at the same time, it doesn't visually mesh to me.

Not even just speaking as a fan. In general. If I'm Tim Buck Two off the street, and you sit me down to watch Discovery and you show me the bridge from "The Cage", mixed in with it, I'd look at the bridge from "The Cage", and be like "What the Hell is this?"

I'm not saying someone else can't think something else, but -- to me -- I'm not going to say my opinion is something it isn't.

Well, I've been holding off on things Discovery until we started actually seeing some stuff, but I do declare the trailer is pretty exciting. It doesn't give a lot to go on, mind, but the promise of a more modern TV-style adventure featuring the full-on contemporary aesthetic and some good, solid donnybrooking with the Klingons is a winner for me, and I like what I see so far of the cast.

(I don't really care about the aesthetic matching the Cage, honestly. It would've been clever if they had managed that but it matters more for the aesthetic to match and look contemporary with the rest of current Trek, expecting them to paint inside the lines of Sixties design and effects budgets makes no sense. By the same token, I'd say leave the Cage alone. It's okay for it to be its own thing and of its own time, even if that exposes the fact that this is all just television.)

Anyway, as far as getting me genuinely excited for what's to come, yeah, this worked for me. Let's hope the actual show delivers.

I wonder if at some future date when the tech is available if someone will "remaster" Kirk and co. on to a more technically advanced bridge set.

I haven't seen the remastered episodes yet. I was planning on starting watching them on Netflix during the summer. They don't have the original versions though, which is a shame.

Someone commented a few days ago that this crew, and the series logo, are the insignia for the Enterprise.

Should this ship have a different badge design or is using the same one consist with what has been done in other shows? Did Enterprise (the series) use different insignia's or were they all the same?

Enterprise was a bit different as they went with the modern-world style mission patches instead of a Starfleet logo.

The delta was initially supposed to be for starships with other patches being for different services (Antares was a freighter, so freighters had their own patch etc). The original costume department assuming all ships were to be different was an error or miscommunication.

The delta has been considered the starfleet logo since 1979 - and thats been followed through with the Kelvin and Franklin of the AU movies (both of which would exist in both continuities). Ditching it now would be a huge error - the starfleet delta's the one thing thats tied every show together.

So the suggestion that the insignia is a mistake is incorrect? Cool.

What exactly is the "delta"? Is it the A/triangle shape or the whole thing including the design inside it?

Even in TOS there was at least one episode - "Court Martial" - where EVERYONE on the Starbase (1701 assigned crewmember or not) had the Star Fleet 'Delta' on their uniforms. I don't recall if there were other episodes where this was the case, but it was here.

But the insignia is the design inside the delta, yes?

Okay, I was confused because I had it in my head that in TOS, everyone had the same delta as Kirk and other ship's crews had there own delta insignia

So other Starfleet captains should have had the same badge as Kirk, but a mistake had them wearing different ones? Okay. So Green and Yeoh will have Kirk's badge, the doctor will have McCoy's badge, etc. ?

Was this rectified in the original series or the movies?

It refers to the shape of the insignia, this shape.

So the show isn't just using the Star Trek Delta, but advertising itself with the Command Delta like the reboot movies did.

Well from TMP onwards, the Delta in one form or another represented the whole of Starfleet, without further comment. There were fan created ideas around in the past that the Enterprise symbol was chosen for the whole fleet on recognition of their amazeballs adventures but that's not canon and frankly seems a bit unlikely, in-universe. Stuff set before TOS has pretty consistently used variants of the Delta for Starfleet as a whole.

    Indeed.

Also, there's some red details in the command chair and in the consoles that are very reminiscent of the ST:TOS bridge. I'm digging it! :D
