News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I'd wager that MacFarlane kept some of the better jokes out of the trailer to not give everything away. I enjoyed everything about the trailer, so I'm all in for the series!

Although it'll be interesting whether CBS consider imitation the sincerest form of flattery.
Strangely enough, the show has been unintentionally serving as sort of a de facto promotional vehicle for ST: Discovery around Los Angeles over the past several months. Jonathan Frakes took a "Where am I?" twitter pic on the set of Orville (where he's directing) and due to the similarities in window design to Trek, it was mistakenly thought he was on the set of Discovery. A full-scale shuttlecraft mockup from Orville has been making its way around the streets of LA between various locations, and has been mistaken as one from Discovery. Filming was being done at the futuristic looking The Oaks building in LA suburb Thousand Oaks, CA (seen as an alien planet in the trailer above), which has previously been featured as the San Angeles Police Dept. building in Demolition Man, and people thought that was possibly for Discovery too.

So CBS possibly owes The Orville some gratitude for generating a bit of unintentional buzz for another 13-episode scifi space opera (albeit Orville being largely comedic in nature) also coming out in the Fall. Lord knows they've dropped the ball on building up buzz for Discovery themselves.

Were you hoping the show would be different from your expectations and if so, how?

I was hoping it might not do all of the predictable, cliched things I expected it to do. I knew it was unlikely to happen, though. Its exactly what I'd expect from the guy, the most obvious, unfunny jokes for every situation.

Oh, he will watch it. So he can complain.

 Nope. I'd only do that if it were a property I cared about, and even then I'd give it one episode (like how I hate watched one episode of Legion, then never saw another second of it). But, this is a Seth McFarlane show. If it didn't vaguely resemble space shows I like, I wouldn't have even watched the trailer.

Hayden Christenson and Natalie Portman guest star in the first season. You"ll be missing much!

I'd rather see that they what they showed in the trailer

Well, I do hope the show keeps to a minimum the really bad cliche jokes like potty humor. But I do expect the show to poke fun at all the Star Trek tropes. So in that respect, I expect and want the show to do all the cliche star trek jokes. In addition, the show description does say that the show will deal with everyday problems so I am not surprised that we got marriage jokes in the trailer. The show will combine star trek jokes with everyday type jokes.

I like the set lighting, very "TNG". Modern Sci-fi tv shows usually prefer more dark tones (Even "Enterprise").

There's absolutely 0% Enterprise in that set -- not even if you squint. It's 100% TNG homage, from the sets to the uniforms to the dialogue. McFarlane is a total fan. This is the long awaited 8th season, 23 years in the making!

Perhaps I wasn't clear. The two pitctures show the contrast between the two lightning.

Man, I had no idea bout this. How did I miss it?! I'm excited!

I've been saying CBS should have given Trek to him for years. (And even argued they made the wrong choice with Fuller.) A year for now, I'll either be right or look like a total idiot.

Well, that's not true. I'll look like a total idiot no matter what.

Works for me, loved the view screen joke!
Galaxy Quest meets the Zucker brothers.

I enjoyed it, I don't mind Seth but I do hate family guy. I don't see this getting past 1 season though.

That is my fear as well. If the show comes across as lame and low quality, it will get cancelled. It will need to get big ratings and get a solid following.

No comment on Kassidy Yates being part of the crew? :D
I mentioned several pages ago that Penny Johnson was one of the reasons why I'm giving the show a shot despite my distaste for Seth McFarlane.

I thought it was strange they didn't list that in her credits in the show's promo blurb.
Yeah, I thought that was really strange, too, but then I noticed that they didn't mention Band of Brothers for Scott Grimes either, so I guess they wanted to stick to more recent projects.
