Agents of Shield - Season 4

I must confess I wasn't sure how good of an actress she was (aside from the brief glimpse of Agnes) until her performance as human Ophelia. Not only was her performance in that role raw and real, it also informed how much she put into the other roles, particularly original AIDA.

No kidding. She is a great actress. She has had to play several different characters from an emotionless android to a human discovering emotions for the first time. I was very impressed by the beach scene. She was very convincing as someone experiencing all these new sensations for the first time. And the scene where Fitz rejects her love was WOW. The way she just exploded into pure rage was scary!

Human Ophelia feels like two people or like Two Face; Pre-breakup and Post-breakup. I'll admit that I really thought, 'hey, maybe she turns out to just be good!' and then when Fitz chose Jemma (which I didn't doubt would happen) I was actually kinda shocked that Ophelia completely loses it. Should have seen it coming, but having it be a surprise was utterly awesome.

I agree that Mallory Jansen is doing a great job. I was impressed when Ophelia woke up in her human body, going straight from as a mannequin to alive and excited.

In the apartment scene where she tells Fitz about how she picked this apartment for them to live in together, she was definitely showing signs of a creepy kidnapper. She was acting like her and Fitz were in a relationship even though he never consented. So I think the show planted some hints that Ophelia would not accept Fitz' rejection very well. But the scene where she freaks out was still amazing! And the actress should get all the credit for making that scene work so well. The way she freaks out is truly terrifying.

Emotionally, Ophelia is a newborn. She's feeling emotions for the first time, so they're as raw, immediate, and unfiltered as those of a very small child. Every new experience is either the most amazingly joyous discovery ever or the most devastating tragedy ever. That's a hard thing to play convincingly, to be so emotionally unfiltered and not have it come off simply as overacting. She did it well.

I don't see anything about it at that link, but both Deadline and Variety have extremely brief articles up stating that AOS has been renewed for a 5th season.

*whew*

I may not have been the biggest fan of the final arc of this season but there's still plenty of storytelling potential left in this series. That and I really want Johnny Blaze to appear properly.

I had been hearing optimistic noises about SHIELD getting renewed, but it's nice to get confirmation. It lessens the sting of Sleepy Hollow a bit. Hmm. No, actually it doesn't.

Well, that was a crazy episode all around. We've got an army of robotic Russians controlled by the original's disembodied head, we've got Talbot coming after SHIELD after finding Mace's badly mangled body (and what's up with that-- does the physical body register the injuries inflicted on the avatar?), we've got some awkward moments between Coulson and May back in the real world, we've got YoYo going a bit nuts and entering the Framework, we've got the return of Ghost Rider-- and we've got Super-Duper Aida, who apparently programmed a lot more than just teleportation into her chromosomes.

It was fascinating watching her experience human sensations and feelings for the first time (although I would have expected her to complain about thought processing and memory problems), and seeing Fitz, despite his own existential crisis, trying to cultivate her potential for empathy. It was going pretty well until he tried to let her down easy, not taking into consideration that she's basically an adolescent. And then we had the deadly super-powered temper tantrum. I wonder how things will end for her? In anger or in empathy? And will she die or will they figure out a way to get her back into the Framework, as a normal human being?

You want to see something, go watch Galavant. She can also sing and handle broad comedy.
That was a great show and it's nice to see some of the actors getting good work elsewhere. In addition to Aida, the actress who played Isabella has been on Once Upon A Time and the guy who played the Jester was on Doctor Who.

She was acting like her and Fitz were in a relationship even though he never consented

Well technically, half of him did. He even admitted he was still in love with her. The differences is he knew those memories were of an alternate life.

Aida couldn't see that.

Aida couldn't see that.

She goes by Ophelia now. Aida was Radcliffe's name for her, standing for Artificial Intelligent Digital Assistant. As Ophelia said to Radcliffe, "Do not call me that here. "Aida" is an acronym. The "A" stands for artificial. Do you know how degrading it is?" And since Ophelia is now (In)human, she's in many ways a distinct being from Aida.
