Capaldi Leaving Doctor Who

Nothing is truly confirmed about the First Doctor, though that would be fun. I also don't consider "The First Doctor is returning" to be a spoiler. If it's something that would appear in a TV Guide description, I don't personally consider it a spoiler.

Not a spoiler: Khan returns to after 15 years to seek vengeance on Admiral Kirk and his crew.
Spoiler: Spock dies at the end of Star Trek II.

As for ratings, first, I think any show that takes a full year off is going to have a ratings hit. That's a REALLY long break.

Second, Doctor Who is very unique for the UK. I don't think any other show has become such a hit internationally, especially in the US. I'd be curious what the ratings would be if the worldwide audience is factored in.

The most important thing is that the show doesn't suck. The writers have maintained the ability to create good strong stories. Not every episode is Blink, but the show as a whole is very good.

It didn't, though. Episode 1 did better than Episode 1 of Series 9 and unless there's an astonishing drop-off in Timeshifted viewing, Episode 2 will beat Episode 2 of Series 9.

The ratings aren't that far from where they were in the mid 1980s, and it was cancelled not long after.
Mid 80s? You do realize classic Who was cancelled (or rather put "on hiatus") in 1989, which is hardly the mid 80s. It is indeed the very definition of late 80s.
Forget about all that for a second. The Mirror posted that the First Doctor WILL return for the Christmas Special.

Any real truth to that? Thoughts?
IIRC, that story was debunked somewhere, but damned if I can remember where now. It should be noted, though that Innerspace, the sci-fi news program on Canada's Space channel is reporting the story as fact, though that doesn't really mean much. Back in 2013 when rumours began circulating that Peter Davison was going to be in Day of the Doctor, Innerspace reported that as fact. Or even more amusingly, when rumours were circulating that Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany was in line for the lead of Rogue One, they went ahead and made their headline story the declaration that she was indeed cast in the role, which led to them having egg on their faces later that week when Disney announced Felicity Jones would be the lead.

So did Smith's other years.

Spin it all you guys like. DW is hardly safe as a "flagship show." The ratings aren't that far from where they were in the mid 1980s, and it was cancelled not long after.

Lol. We're the ones who are spinning.

Now you are going back 30 years to make whatever point you are trying to make.

What's next? "Guys, Capaldi isn't getting nearly the ratings Hartnell got!! Spin it all you want, but clearly he's a failure!!!!!"

Good luck.
