Would Trek be relevant today as it was years ago?

With the current political climate, I wonder if Star Trek would be relevant today as it was 50 years ago during the sixties.

When Discovery airs, will they cover topics such as terrorism, the political climate and climate change and today's issues. I wonder what Star Trek will make of the current President and if he will get a mention. I wonder what the President will do. Will he block Trek from airing or allow it air?

I hope I don't offend anyone.

As for the OP, I think Trek looks downright quaint compared to other shows these days. I don't know what Discovery is going to do, but I can almost guarantee Donald Trump won't care.

When has Trek ever been NOT relevant? As long as there are politics and social issues, Trek will be relevant. The older series might look quaint in production values, what could get past the censors, etc... but the core messages will always be relevant.

Heck, in the 1980s my mother took a point from "Enemy Within" and applied it to a managerial situation she was facing at work. That was 20 years after the episode aired and it was personal application on what being a manager meant. It had nothing to do with a social or political issue.

With the rise of LGBT rights and protests, I found on a recent rewatch (last year or year before) that TNG"s "The Outcast" felt just as applicable 20 years after it was produced. Sure, it might be klunky and may not go far enough for some viewers, but you'll always have that issue. You can't please everyone.

Trek has always been about shining a spotlight on social issues in a sci-fi setting and now, given where TV is these days, they'll be able to keep on doing that with have more impactful and complex stories that hopefully keep commenting on the human condition. Also the fact the Discovery will be on streaming service where they seem to have far more wiggle room than bending to the pressures of TV constraints should allow them to, hopefully, tell some great stories with some great acting to bring them to life.

It's Discovery I want to submit scripts for and the sooner the better. I've got 24 story outlines and in 1992 they paid $2500 a pitch. That's $40000 at 1992 prices. And I can write two scripts in a month.

The days where Trek sneaks messages under the radar are long gone. TV has changed, the landscape has changed and I seriously doubt any message Discovery gives us (on it's sleeve or otherwise) will be breaking new ground.

So no, Trek won't be as relevant as it once was. But that's okay.

It wouldn't be as relevant to tv overall but it would to sci-fi tv. We don't really have any space opera's on tv anymore, plus the only genre show that seems fully committed to dealing with issue's is "Supergirl." I think "Star Trek" could do that but expand on the type of issue's explored because Trek tends to have a wider target audience than a CW show. Also if it was done on CBS like the current Trek show is it could be a boom for network tv which is no longer seen as relevant because of cable, except FOX which still tries to be a little more creative than ABC,CBS and NBC. Granted they also have a habit of cancelling these creative shows to early but that is another issue.
