Nah, they screwed it up. Not necessarily in choosing to tackle it differently than the comics, but simply in making a really bad (and unfocused) movie. If they had told the same story with a decent script, they might not feel the need to try again, now, either.

I must be the only person in the world who quite likes "The Last Stand" - my biggest criticism of it is that it wasn't long enough, it was too rushed at 90-something minutes. Even another 20-25 minutes would've really helped that film.

Last Stand, for me, is one of those movies where if you break it up it's not so bad. Most of the individual scenes are okay, there's just some kind of "less than the sum of its parts" thing going on with it.

...And a handful of stuff I hate sprinkled throughout.

I'm not a comics guy, so I could be wrong, but from what I've heard, the Dark Phoenix Saga isn't about Jean standing around mute, looking constipated, and doing whatever Magneto tells her to do, until Wolverine kills her because she's making some water levitate.

I liked it. A lot. I liked it more than 2000's "X-Men" and Singer's later films in the franchise.

The only way I can think of to this is to quote Henry Jekyll from the musical Jekyll & Hyde: "Things are not wrong just because they are new".

There is absolutely no way to call any movie "bad" based solely on objective facts, so linking to subjective arguments doesn't do anything to refute my comment.

I love The Last Stand. It's not a perfect film, but, on the whole, it does everything it sets out to do and fits very nicely within the overall narrative tapestry of the franchise.

I just always hated that they put Ben Foster as Angel in an X-Man outfit on the poster. And on the DVD. And now I have to look at it on the Blu ray.
I remember been really excited to see him as part of the team, when actually he never wears one in the movie, never even joins the team, and is barely in the frickin movie at all anyway. He's only in three scenes; refusing his treatment, showing up for 5 seconds at the mansion, and silently rescuing his dad at the end.
I always felt so cheated by that poster.

Hm, I wonder if this means the New Mutants movie won't be a "team" movie in the sense of heroes in matching (or even dedicated personalized) uniforms, going on missions assigned by the Professor, as two "team" movies in one year would be pushing it, especially since there's no confirmed X-films coming out in 2019.

Well, the New Mutants were never really meant to be a team that the Professor would send out "on missions" anyway. They were never originally intended to become "X-Men" at all. They were the student class. The uniforms were more like gym clothes, to be worn in the Danger Room. Of course, that never stopped adventures from finding them...

An interesting set of movies. I'm excited for Deadpool, and interested in the other two. Hopefully Dark Phoenix is better then Apocalypse, which was ok but not great. I like the New Mutants comics a lot, so hopefully the movie adapts the characters well.

Well, for one I thought the villain was bland. Say what you want about his look but even ignoring that Apocalypse was boring in both writing and the performance. His powers were also wildly inconsistent (he could have turned the X-Men to dust immediately, but didn't even when it was clear he intended to kill them...because?). His horsemen were boring (Storm got nothing and just switched sides with no issue, Psylocke I wouldn't even remember was there if she hadn't used the classic costume and "Angel" was just unneeded). Most of the new characters got very little in the way of things to do or development (both X-Men and Horsemen) and only Xavier, Magneto and Mystique really got anything.

Speaking of Mystique, I'm not a fan of how she's been pushed on the franchise solely because the actress got more famous, but even forgetting that she felt badly written and Lawrence felt a bit like she was sleep walking through the role this time around. The story overall just wasn't that great. It had some of the basic Apocalypse stuff, but it was just long and with none of the characters except Xavier and Magneto being that interesting made it felt longer. I think the movie really needed to focus on the new X-Men (Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Jean grey) over the same three characters from the last few movies yet again. It also just needed better writing in general.

Overall it was an ok movie. Xavier and magneto were generally as good as they usually are, the action was ok (especially the Quicksilver scene) and it did make me want to see a sequel with the new team (as long as they get more development). I own it and I'll rewatch it occasionally, but its the least good of the good X-Men movies in my opinion (those movies being X-Men 1 and 2, First Class, DoFP and this movie, not counting Deadpool as an X-Men film).
