News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

I am very pleased by this. Good choice. :techman: He's an actor with a great deal of screen presence.

I agree with the poster above that I'm kinda expecting him to be killed off by the end of the series though (bearing in mind that this is the first Star Trek captain who isn't actually the series' lead, as compared to Number One being the audience identication character.) But that could just be me being overly cynical. Maybe. ;)

...of course it is. It's a comedy article from cracked. It's not trying to be an academic article. I posted one of those earlier. However, all the facts stated in it are directly sourced.

Again, I'm not stating cruise ships are dangerous. I wrote a flippant comment (not a post trying to dissuade people from taking them) where I said they are not regulated (true) so are probably more dangerous than a 24th century starship operating under Federation law and Starfleet regs.

For all I know cruise ships are, per capita, the safest vacation you can take today when compared to other popular trips and destinations. I've no idea what the general stats are I comparison to other vacations. If you have them and want to post them, go ahead. I'd be interested to see them.

They are poorly regulated though and you're screwed if something does happen.

Yeah, that article was hilariously bad, especially in describing safety stats. "While air travel is still the safest way to get to your destination, crossing an ocean on a boat sure as shit ain't second." Apparently, because "between 1995 and 2011, according to CruiseJunkie.com, a whopping 165 persons went missing".

Now here's some of the other stats you asked for: Odds of being killed on a flight = 1 in 29.4 million per flight. Train fatalities = 700 out of 650 million passengers = 1 in 0.9 million per year. Motor vehicle = 1 in 9000 per year.

Now based on the 165 figure, we have about 10 missing per year from 1995 to 2011, out of 20 million cruises per year, so odds are 1 in 2 million per cruise. But that's sure as shit nowhere near second place, right, Cracked?

I'm sorry my comment started an argument about racism, which by no means was my intention: I merely wanted to correct a mistake

Come to think of it- he'd make a good Garth of Izar, as well...
He could definitely pull off Garth level crazy. I think that's why they told us his name right away so we wouldn't froth at the mouth over the possibility and then burn down the internet when we find out he's not.

If they wanted a very killable British guy they should have gotten Sean Pertwee. Dude seems to die in everything he's in.

And he was in one of my favorite horror films ever, along with Isaacs... Event Horizon!

I'm really excited for this casting. This is great. The cast is shaping up very nicely.

Isaacs could have been the Cardassian who brought down Dukat, beating him at his own game.

If I remember correctly in the XXIII century the Cardassians are peaceful and do not have bad relations with the federation, it is a republic that promotes poetry and art.

The famous Cardassian Writer Iloja of Prim finished his years living in vulcan

Speaking of poetry, Captain Lorca's (presumable) namesake, Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, was killed by Fascists at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. I wonder if Captain Lorca will suffer a similar fate…
